Good grief, why don't people just call the number and find out what it is.  Call back gets "Thank you for calling AT&T voicemail system.  If you have a voicemail box please enter your 10 digit number to access your voicemail.  I don't know why you would get a phone call from an automated system: maybe to set up your voicemail, or confirm your forwarding???

I think what the problem is here (and in a number of other threads) is that when people access their voicemail from certain providers (probably using a selection from an on phone menu) the access gets placed in their call log as an incoming call using the number that would be called for manual voicemail access.  The type of phone being used may also be a factor.  (From my experience, the combination of T-Mobile and iPhone does not show this behavior; in fact it does not show any access to voicemail as an entry in my call list.  My Kyocera flip-phone on AT&T clearly shows Voicemail access as outgoing calls labeled as "Voicemail".)
In some other threads, this type of phone behavior has people posting that they think their significant other is cheating on them (I can just imagine the breakups - "I'm sorry dear, but I am leaving you.  You have been cheating on me with your Voicemail.")

It's your voicemail phn number - that's why it asks for a password.
