A man with a heavy Indian accent saying he was "Ray Cooper" left message saying he was from the "Treasury Department" and we needed to contact him immediately or have our attorney do it, saying we would be in a lot of trouble if we didn't.  I don't pick up unless I recognize the number.  Friends have gotten similar scam calls.

Do consider maybe getting a call blocking device or phone.. You can google them and many are around $50.00 or so.If its a cell phone, some already have call blocking, if not, there are free apps on the web that will work for some. You can google this. If you have a smart phone, there is a free app called call control. Iphones appear to have apps also. Another one is called Mr. Number.

This is a criminal extortion scam operating out of India. They are making the calls utilizing VOIP and the names of legitimate firms to make it appear the calls are originating from within the US. There is NO "company" or "debt" and you will NOT be arrested. They are harvesting and/or buying consumers' personal identifying information and you need to do whatever you can to protect yourself. This includes: Notifying the FTC: https://www.ftccomplaintassistant.gov/, placing fraud alerts with all three credit bureaus, notifying your bank and employer and letting these criminals know you are aware they are attempting to extort money for a non-existent debt and have alerted the authorities.

We received a call from a Roy Cooper from the Department of Legal Affairs US Treasury.  That stated we needed to contact him right away regarding a legal matter.  Something about legal action would be taken ,wages would be garnished, liens would be put on property.  He had an extremely heavy accent and i could not understand him.  I told him i needed to speak with someone else in regards to this.  He told me more mumbo jumbo about liens and legal action was going to taken etc.

I also got a message from a man named, John Baker, with a heavy Indian accent saying he was from the the "Department of Legal Affairs" and that I needed to call back ASAP or have my attorney do it. He said it was in regards to legal enforcement against my name and if I did not return the call I would be in a legal mess. I found the verbiage as suspicious and decided to Google the number and found several other folks reporting this guy as a scammer. I'm glad we can identify these people via a Google search and avoid the harassment from these idiots.

My wife received two calls from a gentleman with a heavy Indian accent as well.  After she refused to give him information or have even a conversation with him (he read her an "affidavit," she receive two robo-calls from "Officer Julie Smith" of the IRS urging her to call or have her attorney of record call.  The Indian gentleman threatened my wife with the loss of her drivers license, a fine and even jail time.  Complete garbage.  My brother is an analyst with the FBI who specializes in bank and computer fraud.  He'll be getting a call from us with ALL the information in the morning.

Nelson Martin, Legal Affairs, US Department of the Treasury.  Heavy Indian accent, Liens, attorneys, heavy fines... blah blah blah.  Total Scam, makes me sad people fall for this stuff.  I played along with the call, and I think he figured out I was playing with him, he then promptly told me to go F$&k myself and hung up on me.  I wonder where the treasury department finds these rude people!  HAH :)

This parasite is now using the name Nelson Martin.  What a loser!  Anyway, thanks for the info guys. Confirms our suspicion of it being a scam of some sort.  I think John Baker was the officer from Chips (80's tv show). Ha!

Got the same call and I knew it was BS.  So, i unleashes a string of profanities which made my daughter's jaw drop.  Give this guy credit, he stayed on the line and listened to my rant about how he isthe scum of the earth and scammers like him can go F themselves.  He did get a few words in, such as, "Wai can you do me a favor?" And, "I just want to know about your cable tv."  This kind of junk ticks me off.  I think we need to all start  calling him back and start threatening him with prosecution and extradition to/ from the US.

In theory, that could work, but there are a lot of things that could go wrong with that idea.

I usually threaten them with drone air-strikes from a fleet in the Indian Ocean.  Shuts 'em up.  At least for awhile.
