Texted about an item I had for sale on Kijiji. Then asked for my email, name phone number and address to send me a certified cheque to buy the saddle. Gave the name Gabrielle Skinner.

I had a person that was the person's daughter text me about a Kijiji ad and they wanted to send me a certified cheque or bank draft and were going to give me $50 more than what I asked.  When I called the number that had texted me it was disconnected.  When I asked my bank they told me certified cheques and bank drafts can be fraudulent.  The name in the email was Gabrielle Skinner and it was a gmail account.

I just had an identical request to purchase, same name, same gmail account, same bonus offer of $50, family member contacted from 647-793-2230, all the same storyline.  He gave a reason that he can’t review the items because he is from out of town.   Suspicious.  Not selling to this person.
    Thank you for your post.

    Craigslist, Kiiji, AutoTrader, Etc. Scam:

The scam works like this.  Communication is always by text or email for some made up reason such as they are deaf, they deployed and can't use their phone (then how did the text get out?), etc.  They think your item as described is perfect.  They might ask a few questions about it, and then will pay your asking price, sight unseen, because they are never around close by to come look at it (they use the stationed somewhere in the military a whole lot, or working overseas, or on an oil rig in the middle of the ocean, or simply fill in your own job here).  They will give you an extra $40 or $50 to hold it for them.  Then they tell you they will send a cashier’s check or money order for that amount plus extra for the “shipper”.  They count on the fact that people don’t know or realize that the funds being made available by the bank and the check actually clearing are two completely different things.  They ask you to wire that extra money by untraceable means such as Western Union or Moneygram.  The check or money order turns out to be bogus and you end up out the money you sent plus the bank fees.  Also, if the check is big enough you may end up being charged criminally.  Please note that check was probably mailed from somewhere in the US, so it is very important that you take the check and the envelope it came in to the Post Office and have them forward it to the Postal Inspectors.
In the case of them using PayPal, the same thing happens.  They send a fake email looking like it came from PayPal, get you to pay the shipper, and then find out that the e mail was fake and no money is available.

I got this message in regards to my marketplace ad so I searched the name and email on google. Seems very similar to what people above are saying

This is the copy and paste of what he said:
“It is my Uncle that is interested in your MILWAUKEE culk and adhesive gun with 18 V, Please write to him at (gabrielskinner046@gmail.com) because my uncle is not on facebook. Please write with your price and pictures and it is going to pick-up by himself.”

I’m not going to take the chance I reported and blocked

The person on Facebook that messaged was named John Gabrielle and the profile was recently made and no pictures or activity

Had the same thing happen to me, for girls Lego.... Questioned why an etransfer couldn't be made, claimed he "wasn't in town".... Same shtick as everything else mentioned here... Only difference was original Kijiji message was from a Harry White, claiming his father wanted the product.
