I share your frustration, but getting even such a closely garded number is as easy as a telemarketer's using a computer/outbound dialer to call numbers sequentially. It's easy to program, or buy software, to dial numbers; it will start with an area code, then a prefix, then 0001,0002,0003,etc, If it's a valid number, it will ring. It doesn't matter if the call's from a family member or telemarketer, if its a working number that's dialed, it will ring. Also, consider that if you or a family member ever applied for a credit card, discount shopping card or whatever, the application usually requires a phone number. If it's provided, most likely, it's sold.

Sometimes, the telecom carrier that charges you extra for an unpublished number won't list it in the directory, but will sell it to their marketing partners.

Keep trying to guard the number, but it WILL get out and you WILL get telemarketing calls. Good Luck.
