Recieved call today, no msg left. Caller ID shows "Charity". Lots of calls from Pennsylvania the last 2 months. Some are Fireman's Fund asking for a donation. They are not the "real" Fireman's Fund. Be careful. I blocked this number and reported to DNC.

    Block them if you can.

I always report them and now I call up different agencies to report them.

So blocking them until they start calling with a new number then block that number and un block the old number.

Like I am going to give to an caller marked only as Charity, who never leaves a message or no one there when you do answer (which happens when you mistakenly think you know who is calling).

A guy continuously calls my phone number from this number 484-589-5619 Philadelphia claiming he is calling from the Police Fundraiser center. As soon as I answer the phone he acts like he knows who I am by calling me by my last name and then he proceeds to ask for my husband. I knew something was suspicicious about him because he sounded very wicked and aggressive. I told him not to call me anymore. The police department has no fundraising hotline so he is a LYING S.O.B.

Caller I.D. said charity. Never give money to these people!!!, in fact, unless its a local charity and you know the person calling, never give money over the phone. If you feel  compelled to give money to the charity, go to your computer and find a charity that is legit and donate!!!!.

Just curious.  Why wouldn't they answer when you pick up by mistake?  Isn't the whole idea is for them to talk to you to ask for donations?

It came up simply as "I" on the caller ID.

We finally bought "all-in-one call blocker" and used it to block this call. We have many fewer calls now that we have this pre-programmed device in our home. It's amazing. I learned about it by checking out others' comments about a myriad of numbers calling us. I love the quiet at dinnertime now!

    Short educational post.

The DNC list is not a magic switch attached to your phone line, that will block calls.

The DNC list can help stop calls originating from legitimate, registered telemarketers.
    * Your calls were not from legitimate, registered telemarketers.
    * Therefore, the DNC list cannot stop those calls.

The DNC list does not automatically block calls.  Instead, it provides a list of  "do not call" phone numbers to telemarketers who registered their businesses with the FCC, and who pay a fee for the list.  The DNC list administration is supported by these fees.

The DNC list exempts political callers, survey organizations,  charities, and companies with preexisting business relationships, as well as debt collectors and certain nonprofit organizations, but these organizations usually have their own, internal Do Not Call list (ask them).

The DNC list is not effective against criminals, spammers and scammers, because those telescum are not registered, do not subscribe to the DNC list, and do not care if you are on or off that list.
It can stop calls from legitimate telemarketers, and it does a pretty good job at that.  Just think ... if there were no DNC, you would be receiving incessant calls from BOTH legitimate and spamming telemarketers!

Remember, the FCC's Do Not Call site is a good one to report unwanted calls from LEGITIMATE telemarketers.   To report spammers and scammers, visit the FTC site, at https://www.ftccomplaintassistant.gov/

If you receive calls even after reporting them (and waiting a sufficient time), then you should consider using a call blocker app, device or service as your first line of defense.  Google "call blocker" to see such things at Amazon or other sites.

The references cited say nothing about the callers (telemarketers, scammers, spammers) having to be registered.

    George -

Please read the documentation more carefully.
Scammers and spammers do not register ... they ignore the DNC list.  Although there is a law against such cold calls, criminals ignore laws, right?

"Legitimate" telemarketers subscribe to the DNC list, and get updates every 31 days.  They get their "subscription" by registering their business with the DNC people.  The FTC sometimes call this by a different name ... "subscription" rather than "paid registration", but the subscribers must indeed register AND pay!
