Picked up call from this number, a recording said it was from the IRS Crime Investigation unit. I hung up, called them back and got a very Indian sounding person who said he was "officer Jack Cooper". I told him to take us off their call list and he said "ok, I will do that."

Sean left a message on my voicemail saying he is from the IRS and if he doesn't receive a return call from me and my attorney about a legal matter then it will be all on me.  I called back and asked if this was a scam and the reply was "Yes ma'am.

I received this call while I was sleeping so I let the voicemail take it because usually no one but people I know leave me a voicemail, but in this case they left me the very scary message in a fast talking voice that did repeat the number telling me to return the call.  Never once mentioning my name so I am on here checking the number out and as I suspected a scam call that I am going to let my local police department know about especially since I am on the do not call register for my cell phone.  Trust me folks this is not going away since they are scammers.  As my name indicates this is where the caller can stick it!

Yep, I got one of these calls too. Some foreign young guy, difficult to understand. I kept insisting I never got any paperwork showing problems with my past taxes, and they told me the IRS didn't have to notify you that they were filing charges. And having never been in legal trouble, I panicked, until a friend who had come across this before assured me it's a scam.

When I tried to make a second call, wanting more info, he became very abrupt and hung up. Every call thereafter, he states he may not talk to me any further once the legal process starts, yadda yadda yadda. Now the line just shows as constant busy signal.

I guess the "IRS" doesn't want their money now.

All they are interested in is full and docile cooperation from unsophisticated and uneducated victims. This is why educating as many people as possible regarding this and other extortion scams is so important. The more who know, the more likely these scams will die a slow and painful death.

Total scam.  Originates in either India or Pakistan.   Block and ignore.   DO NOT RETURN THE CALL!

I’m an Enrolled Agent with the IRS (Inactive). IRS does not initiate contacts by phone.  US mail only.   IRS does not file lawsuits.   Court action, if any is handled by the DOJ and all parties are entitled to legal assistance if it is a criminal matter.  But--tax disputes are for the most part civil matters.  90% of all IRS tax disputes are settled administratively.  IRS has absolutely no authority to call on local law enforcement for anything. Local law is never involved in IRS tax disputes. IRS does not threaten to involve local law enforcement or to arrest you for nonpayment of federal taxes.  IRS has no powers of arrest.    If LE is necessary, US Marshals do the job.  IRS does not cold call anyone and demand immediate payment of  money.  IRS does not ask for financial information over the phone.   IRS does not accept Green card money paks for payment in any case.  No one is prosecuted for ordinary tax disputes. IRS has absolutely no authority over anyone's professional license. Professional licensing is handled by state governments.  Yes, levies on property to satisfy an existing tax obligation do occur, but only after a very long period of negotiation. And yes, liens are placed on individuals but  usually after a lot of negotiation and a failure to reach a settlement.    All determinations of tax liability are subject to appeals.  All  contacts by the IRS are initiated by US mail.

I have received the same call twice now.  It has come in when I'm not home so I receive the threatening message you have described.  So far I am just ignoring this because I know it's a scam.  I'd like to report these people, but I'm not sure how.  I worry about elderly people who might not understand that this is bogus!

I knew it was a scam, so I called back and asked for his physical location so I could come pay him.  He hung up.  I called him back to say I was sad that he hung up on me since I wanted to give him all my money.  He hung up again and blocked the number.  So then I called him from a different number, and after he answered 'IRS', I asked him why he hung up on me, to which he responded we had never spoken before.  I asked if he was in India or Pakistan, at which point he made a wife comment and hung up.  After a couple of more calls he blocked that number also.  He wasted my time, so I thought it would be fun to mess with him and waste some of his.  I also entered his number and the details on the Federal Trade Commission site for reporting scam calls and individuals impersonating government employees.  Oh well....

That's hilarious! I wonder if my caller is related to the guy with the New York area code that left a similar message (from a blocked number as well) on my answering machine a few weeks ago. Whoever they are, I hope they don't get to me before the "FBI" agents who keep emailing me with a threat that they are coming to arrest me (unless, of course, I send them several hundred dollars to have the charges dropped).

I received a call and they left a message with a number.   I called them back.   They threatened me that they will come in two hours and put me in jail that I owe IRS $1,869.00 for years 2012, 2013, 2014.   I told him that my accountant and my son take care of my taxes.   Asked his name - he gave Brandon Jones.   He said they will find me wherever I am.  I told him that I had to leave right away.   I have never received any scam calls before and really was very upset but I did not give him any information at all.   Immediately after I hung up I talked about this with my son and he told me that he has received calls like that too.   Finally I hung up.    Next time somebody calls I will ask where he is located and other questions.

This moran is still at it using the same story of threatening a lawsuit. What lawyer threatens a lawsuit by phone versus certified mail? Shaun white,I believe, is the  X-games 2006/2010 gold medalist for the snowboarding half pipe, didn't  sound like him on the voicemail though. Sorry Shaun ,had to block your number buddy.

Got a threatening voicemail from "Officer Sean Wright" (or something like that) saying to have my attorney contact him. Didn't say what about, just that I would be in legal trouble if I ignored the message. Didn't use my name in the message, so I thought he meant to call someone else until I returned the call to tell him he had the wrong number. Got a recording saying the person couldn't be reached, so husband & I thought it was weird.

just received a call from this number.  never received an IRS scam call.  first it was a recording with a long message saying myself or attorney needed to call back.  I hung up and called and the name was a different person but clearly the same as the recording. when he asked me why I was calling I told him to tell me why he was calling and he hung up on me.  so I called back, yes I like to instigate!  he said the name on the recording, officer shawn ?, and I made sure to let him know that he was using the correct name this time.  he told me to, "f" off and hung up again.  so I called a third time for giggles, and told him to not call me again and to go "f" himself!  :)  oh and I blocked his number this time!
