Got a call, with a Caller ID of "Benton City, WA," claimed to be the IRS.  Since the IRS has my cell number to text me return status messages, I am sure it's a scam.

Called received on 9/16/15 at approx. 2:50pm EDT. CID identified the caller as Benton City, WA. Didn't answer, went to voicemail. Message was garbled, but sounded like "The IRS has filed a lawsuit against you" and left the number 588-7455 (no area code) to call. CID provided 509 area code. Did not try to call back.

Got a message indicating that I was negligent on filing taxes, in which my accountant would be quite surprised. I spoke to 2 different men of Indian descent in which I could barely understand. The first one was Officer Daniel Smith Badge #5593. He indicated having conducted an audit between 2009 and 2014. He said I owed $3,986.73. He asked if I the the funds. I indicated that this was ridiculous and why didn't the IRS send me correspondence. He indicated they sent me 2 notices and that they were going to send local authorities to my residence to seize all my belongings and freeze accounts. I told him to have at it. He reiterated that they'd like to resolve the issues before taking action. I asked to speak to his supervisor. His "senior officer" came on the line and mentioned his name and badge number which I could not understand. When I asked him to repeat twice, he indicated my voice was breaking up. The call was eventually terminated.

Total scam.  Originates in either India or Pakistan.   Block and ignore.   DO NOT RETURN THE CALL!

I’m an Enrolled Agent with the IRS (Inactive). IRS does not initiate contacts by phone.  US mail only.   IRS does not file lawsuits.   Court action, if any is handled by the DOJ and all parties are entitled to legal assistance if it is a criminal matter.  But--tax disputes are for the most part civil matters.  90% of all IRS tax disputes are settled administratively.  IRS has absolutely no authority to call on local law enforcement for anything. Local law is never involved in IRS tax disputes. IRS does not threaten to involve local law enforcement or to arrest you for nonpayment of federal taxes.  IRS has no powers of arrest.    If LE is necessary, US Marshals do the job.  IRS does not cold call anyone and demand immediate payment of  money.  IRS does not ask for financial information over the phone.   IRS does not accept Green card money paks for payment in any case.  No one is prosecuted for ordinary tax disputes. IRS has absolutely no authority over anyone's professional license. Professional licensing is handled by state governments.  Yes, levies on property to satisfy an existing tax obligation do occur, but only after a very long period of negotiation. And yes, liens are placed on individuals but  usually after a lot of negotiation and a failure to reach a settlement.    All determinations of tax liability are subject to appeals.  All  contacts by the IRS are initiated by US mail.

You'd have a long way to go.  The callers are located in India and Pakistan and are outside anyone's reach.  THe US government can't do anything. And the local governments do little to close down the illegal call-centers.  Invest in a call blocker.  And calm down.  You're talking about a billion people on the Indian sub-continent.  Scammers who happen to be in the US and are assisting the overseas scammers,  are being caught and prosecuted.  So relax.

I got a call today claiming to be IRS and a lawsuit has been filed.  It's been on the news up here in Maine.  This is a scam.  IRS contacts us by mail if there is a problem.  It's best to ignore such calls.  It's just someone trying to scare you into responding to the scam.

Got a got saying I owe $3,986.73. Several people I know have gotten the same call and it seems they ALL owe the same exact payment to IRS and are being sued for it.  I have had tax free income for the last 8 years.  Know they are Pakistan related or other out of the U.S. countries.  They had all my address information.  Someone is selling them our information to use to scam us. The only way I know they could have it.  IRS does NOT call. They mail you what they want you to pay them.  They are not likely to sue us all for this small amount of money.  I was too busy laughing at the representative to care.  They hang up on you anyway.  Don't bother with these people.
