Lady calls asking if I receive mail on ______street. She would not ID herself. She would not give me any information(Who She was, What Company). She stated if I didn't answer she would make down a refusal. I didn't give her any info because she wouldn't provide me with any. She didn't even know who she was talking to(I didn't provide her my name). I hope she didn't mark something bad on someones account due to me that giving her any info. Someone should really look into this company.

The people at this number sent a text and paged my cell. Made it seem urgent and personal. When I called back the lady would not ID herself or her company and wanted to transfer me to the party trying to reach me.
    I hung up.

They also sent me a text page, in addition to calling but not leaving a message. I recognize the "346" as Austin Regional Clinic.

Got a call from this number today. They don't give you any info. Wanted  to transfer me to the party trying to reach me without so much as a word. When you try to call them back it hangs up or they put you on hold. It is a collection agency for unpaid medical bill.

I called the number back and the lady that answered the phone said, " Police" and then when I asked her again who it was she said something about Travis County?  So I told her that I had the wrong number and hung up.  Then I got on the computer and looked the number up and found out that it's a collection agency for some unpaid medical bills.  Uhum......next time they call........they'll be speaking to my lawyer.

Due to HIPAA regulations a collection agency is not allowed to talk to someone until they verify the identity of the person calling.  They try to verify the address first.  They cannot say is this "Mr. Smith" calling because that would disclose the name of the person that they are collecting on, to a possible third party.  An agency must be very careful not to disclose any information on a collection to a third party.  They are not trying to be tricky, they are following the law.  When the receptionist answers the phone she transfers the call to the collector and cannot give the company information to the person because the collector must verify who they are talking to, in order to make sure they are not a 3rd party, in order to PROTECT the persons identity that they are attempting to collect from.  An agency is not allowed to leave the company name on a message, also due to the HIPAA regulations.  These regulations were written by legislators and the agency is only trying to follow the law.  They do not answer the phone with anything but the name of the company or "Can you please hold".  Some people need to stop jumping to false conclusions.

In agreement here.. somewhat replies to Setting the record straight
Setting- I agree with everything you say here but I also believe that people have a right to make sure that the caller is legit. A lot of times these ARE scam calls or the agency is violating the FDCPA in some way. I wish all agencies behaved the way you say they do. We'd all be a lot less stressed. What's that saying? "You can catch more flies with honey than with vinegar". When someone calls and is completely rude to me, even if they are a "legit" agency, I am going to be defensive regardless. I will pay what I owe, that's for sure, but I will also send their name to the FTC. I think a good example of a "legit" agency that needs a good talking-to (and more) would be Portfolio Recovery. WHY they are in business still is beyond me! Not only do they disclose their business to a third party (ie leaving telephone messages on a family answering machine), but they call when you have been paying them if you don't give them your bank info. I send them a Money Order every two weeks like clockwork and they still call me claiming that the computer doesn't recognize this as being paid timely because I won't give them my bank info. Well, they are NOT EVER getting that because I have heard that they like to empty a person's bank account when they can. Got to protect yourself these days!

They are bill collectors in Austin. Mine was for a clinic visit. Clinic had my address wrong so I had not gotten the bill. The other comments are correct, due to HIPPA restrictions they first have to confirm the caller's identity and address before they can really say who they are. It does sound shady at first. Thankfully, I check here first and called them back to fix the issue. Granted they are a bill collection agency so the bill I'm paying is probably slightly more than the original bill since they had to pass it to a collection agency. Better that than have a ding on my credit report.

They called asking for Joshua who is my fiancé and I had no clue how they got my number. He has gotten other  calls saying he owes money when he doesn't from these types of numbers threatening him and saying they have his ss number. I would be very cautious...

    U TELL ME FIRST!
I received a call from these people.  The operator called me by name (must have been through Caller ID) and said "Please hold ______ _______."  I then was connected to a very rude guy that sounded as if he was threatening me.  He said "if you are so and so, you need to know about this or you're going to find out the hard way."  I told them I wasn't going to talk to them about anything until they told me what company they were with.  They would not even disclose that information so as far as I'm concerned they can eat a bag of smashed anuses.

Well thats funny because they leave the name of the collection agency on my voice mail all the time, with a little disclaimer stating that if you are not the person for whom this message is intended, then hang up or delete the message.  It makes absolutely no sense that the agency cant identify them selfs until they identify you.  Thats a crock of [***], they are most certainly being "tricky"

    Set who's record straight?
Collection agencies hire people to make those calls and those people get paid by commission which creates a hostile conversation be ause the employee could care less. I have had people call my grandparents telling them they were with the state police. Just so you guys know, Texas has state troopers. And impersonating a peace officer is against the law. Also, credit agencies will fraudulently re-open closed and settled cases in order to make free money. That has happened to me too. They were reported and shut down. Know your rights, and know what is on your credit report. If it is supposed to be off your credit report, and then all of a sudden you owe someone else for the same thing, that as well is against the law.
