                       Steve Lynch:  Good Bye to a True Baseball Legend

Sad news for me and for so many  baseball fans with the passing of ex Cubs legend Ron Santo. I hoped this day would not come with his place secured in the Hall of Fame but as I feared his passing from health issues came before baseball had one the right thing and placed Santo in Cooperstown where he belonged a long time ago.

Santo was the soul of that great Cubs team that will forever be known for being linked with the summer of 1969 in which the "Miracle Mets" overtook that great Cubs team down the stretch and ended up winning the World Series.   The image of Santo clicking his heels after a Cubs win is still easy to see and for the baseball fans of this generation who may not know let me break down Santo's career and why he should have been introduced into the Hall of Fame many years ago.

His 15 year career included nearly a .280 overall batting average with over 2000 hits, nearly 350 home runs and a total of Nine All Star game appearances .... this all accomplished while dealing daily with the struggles of diabetes.  He won 5 Gold Gloves at the hot corner and hit .300 or better four times while leading the National League in on-base percentage in two separate seasons while also leading being the league leader in walks four times.

I have argued many times that if Brooks Robinson is in the HOF then Santo should be next to the Orioles great and if you compare their stats I think one can see my validation:

SANTO:   .277 Career BA ....  342 Home Runs ... 1331 rbis .... 9 All Star games ... 5 GGs
ROBINSON: .267 Career BA.. 268 Home Runs...  1347 rbis...  18 All SGM ...  16 GGs

I am a diehard St Louis Cardinals fan but the admiration I had for #10 in his prime is at the top of my list.  His passing without a plaque in the Baseball Hall of Fame is a sad day and the following quote from Santo about the passion he had for the Cubs that was so obvious in as a Cubs announcer said it all in a quote in August of 2009 to the AP:  "The emotion for me is strictly the love I have for for this team .... I want them to win so bad."

Ronnie Santo ....thanks for the great memories and may God enshrine you in the Heaven Hall of Fame for being a class act and a true warrior who brought joy to so many with your devoted love to this great game.
