Well, what options does one have to defend themselves against intrusive callers?

    • The Do Not Call list (Federal or State)
Works, but is effective against ONLY "legitimate" telemarketers.  Political callers, surveys and some other callers are exempt.  Scammers ignore the DNC list.

    • NoMoRobo
A system offered by some telephone providers, to help automatically block robocalls.  Google "nomorobo" to see if it works with your phone provider.

    • Shouting, screaming, swearing at the caller
Nope.  Does not stop calls.  May make you hoarse, and will disturb nearby people.

    • Call blocker app, device or service
Could be a good choice (even though the scammers can use fake phone numbers), and some apps are free!
Google "call blocker" for more information, or check your favorite online sales site for a list.
    http://gg.gg/blockers
Your phone provider may also offer blocking services.  Check their web page for information.

If you cannot use any of the above defenses, then:
    • Do not answer calls from unknown numbers ... let them go to voicemail or answering service
    • Do NOT return calls from unknown numbers!  All that does is verify your phone number!  And, in some cases, those return calls may cost $20 or more to complete.
    • If you have a "dumb" cell phone, assign the scammer's number to a group named "scammers" (or similar).  Then, assign a silent ringtone to that group.

I am so tired of these scamming calls. If i am not going to fall for it why keep calling. called stating my computer is sending error messages. funny thing my computer was never registered and there is no way for them to know that. guy said it is not a scam I said I dont care stop calling. I put myself on the national do not call list but it sadly takes 31 days to process.

Received this call on independence day. Whew....what did they do that for? I have zero tolerance for calls of this nature and I was in no mood for this. I explained to the caller what today means to me and this country and it is not the day to play games with a Marine. I KINDLY wished him to have a VERY blessed day.

A guy with Indian or Middle Eastern accent said there was a problem with my computer, first asked if I was using Windows, then said an error report involving a security risk was sent to Microsoft from my computer.  I think he got my name from a job board site because he used my whole name and no one does that.  He wanted me to log in to a website.  Instead of doing that, I wrote it down and looked up the main words (rather than typing in the actual web address in my browser, as he wanted me to).  It is an app that lets someone set up a VPN connection to your computer, available free on the internet.  I told him to forget it, I wasn't going to do that for someone who randomly called me on the phone, and then I hung up.  Someone from that area code, different phone numbers has called me every hour today, this was the first time I answered.  If someone calls you and tells you to log into a site, DON'T DO IT!!  IT COULD BE A VIRUS, OR. . .  NEVER LET SOMEONE LOG INTO YOUR COMPUTER UNLESS YOU KNOW THEM (and even then, I'd be careful).  The website he wanted me to log in to is Team Viewer.  I called the number right back to see how they answered the phone and I got a "this number has been disconnected" message.  I have one of those outgoing messages on my voicemail app too, which I can assign to any number I want.  That's what he's going to hear if he calls me back.  When will these people learn??!!!

Got a call from them today, of course, knew it was a scam, performed reverse number lookup where everyone said it was a scam, and also, reported the incident to the Nassau County Consumer Affairs and FBI Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3).

I just received a call from same number, the guy with an Indian accent got angry at me for not falling for their scam.  Do NOT believe them.  I called Microsoft directly and that number is a scam!
