    Am getting smarter...now every time I see a strange # on caller id I google it.  Funny thing is...I was born in Saranac Lake so recognized the area code.  These scammers  are getting more brazen every day and seem to delight in intimidating people.  The absolute scum of the earth!

    Got a call from these phonies...again (3 times now). First time, no answer, twice more I didn't answer. Too many bad numbers to block. Caller ID is useless, crooks have taken control of our landline telephone system. BUT: the creeps at AT&T just sent my new monthly bill with ANOTHER rate hike on it. They're raising the rates, the local, state and Federal Governments combined are charging over 60% in fees and taxes on the account, and I can't answer my telephone for fear of having my time wasted or scammed.

    Probably not low cal, because it's most likely fattening someone's wallet. I got a call from 518-323-9156 that showed the name LOCAL on my caller ID yesterday 3/16/2015 at 9:24 AM. I was in bed half asleep so I don't remember if I didn't answer it, answered it and got dead air, a recording or said I wasn't interested. With a name such as LOCAL, I might be curious and answer it, then hang up on a telemarketer or scam artist.

    Unfortunately, the number shown is probably spoofed; otherwise, you could report them to the FCC, FTC, your phone company and the police for the comment the scam artist made to you. I've bawled out several scammers before, but it does no good, so I'm tempted sometimes to just get vulgar myself, because if they try to report me, they have to identify themselves somehow... and they probably won't do that. Unfortunately, I've read that if you do that, they mark you for retaliation (like flood you with calls) and you can't stop them if they use many different spoofed numbers. You were smart to do what you did, but scammers and shady telemarketers usually ignore requests to remove your number. Some valid telemarketers and charities will actually do your request, but the telemarketers shouldn't be calling you in the first place if you're on the Do Not Call List. They just don't identify themselves enough so that you can report them to the FTC.

    I think that if you even answer the phone it tells them your number is live. The same is true if your landline number is not unlisted. They can get that from many sources. And if you don't answer most telemarketers or scammers with autodialers put you back on the list to call again in a few days from what I've read. If you answer and hang up or speak to them and tell them no (or get lost or whatever) they just wait a while longer before they call back. I don't know how many different criminals are using that Rachel from credit card services recording, but I hate the ones that spoof my number on my caller ID. Occasionally another scam does that, but the Rachel calls use different numbers. I just know that if I see my name and number it must be a scam. Too bad Congress doesn't fix the loopholes in the federal Spoofing law to make it illegal for people like that to spoof numbers. It's only illegal if they get money or property from you; otherwise, law enforcement, the FCC, FTC, your phone company and the courts can't or won't help you other than telling you it's probably a scam and giving you advice on how not to get cheated.

    Exactly. They don't know your card number or numbers or whether you have MasterCard, VISA, Discover, American Express or whatever. When I've felt like wasting some time, I've pressed 1 and spoken to people – men, women, ones with American or foreign accents, etc., so there may be numerous scammer groups. I always ask them if they have my number(s) or even know what card(s) I have. They just guess at what kind of card you have and I tell them they guessed wrong. One group said they were from Experian, so that implied that they already knew my numbers, which would be a conflict of interest for a credit bureau to do. I still told them no thanks. Sometimes I berate them and tell them I know they're scammers that the feds are trying to catch. They get irritated when I do that, but since they or others like them keep calling anyway, I can't tell if they are retaliating, because they don't flood me with calls... just annoy me occasionally.

    I worked for many years in data processing or information technology and was happy with all the good things we could do with computers. As you said, it's a shame what the world has become. Technology meant for good has made things easier for hackers, scammers, identity thieves and other criminals. They don't have to come out in the open to rob you; they can just do it from home with falsified hardware or software that's hard to trace. They can do it from halfway across the world where our government authorities can't catch or prosecute them without help from foreign governments. The percentage of bad calls I get vs. good calls from family, friends, doctors' offices or businesses where I'm a customer is rising. It's definitely not a thrill to hear the phone ring anymore.

    I still answer some numbers I don't recognize, but not all of them, because a few are businesses I know some of whose numbers I don't know or remember. Luckily, a lot of these calls come when I'm not home, so I can ignore them unless they call back. Sometimes they're not scammers, just wrong numbers.

    I do the same thing you do now: I Google the numbers and usually end up on this website or a similar one. Absolute scum of the earth is a nice name for these scammers.

    I blocked this number and happy I didn't answer it! I went online to research this number because I don't know anyone from that place and sure enough it's a scammer number! After reading all these comments I'm relieved that I'm not alone. Block block block. That is all.

    This scammer just called:

    DATE = 0318
    TIME = 1345
    NMBR = 5183239156
    NAME = LOCAL

    Oh yes.  Area Code "518" is as local as Borneo.  Blacklisted.

    The call back number goes straight to a recording so the person on the other end of the call when they called me felt anonymous and after talking to me 5 year old daughter then me, got rude and called me all sorts of curse words and when I said to put me on the do not call list or take me off the call list, he continued cursing me before hanging up on me.  I don't even know the company because they never said.

    Calls each day from "Credit Card Services" for a week now and had hit #2 to be removed but calls keep coming.  Have asked to be removed after hitting #1 to talk to someone and they just hang up when I ask.  Have told one a bunch of B.S. about having credit cards at a crazy rate and huge amount balance for about 10-15 minutes just to waste his time and then told him that the only thing that will help is for him to remove my number as he is wasting my time like I am wasting his.  He told me there is nothing that he or anyone can do to remove my number and then hangs up on me.  I hate these JERKS!

    Called my house and left no message.  Called back and spoke to Jennifer, said she was from Bank of America.   Said my call was recorded, but knew my name.   She wanted me to verify a recent loan in my name.  I refused, stating I have no dealings with BofA.  She told me to call back and verify my loan, to which I promptly said I won't be calling back.  She said to wait for a letter.

    Got a phone call (9:08am) from an out-of-state number that I didn't "know" or recognize.
    (Does this mean that they are involved in Interstate Fraud?)
    They, of course, left no message.
    As always, I didn't answer, but looked up the number here.

    I am on the National Do-Not-Call List, and have been for a number of years now.
    (I guess this is our government at work for us.  [Or not working for us.])

    I'm going to
    https://consumercomplaints.fcc.gov/hc/en-us
    AND to
    https://complaints.donotcall.gov/complaint/complaintcheck.aspx
    and see if that can get the government to work for me, and stop these calls.
    (Yes I will go through all those steps.)  [I have also bookmarked these URL's.]
    I have also assigned a silent ringtone to this number.  (I am up to 97 now.)
    We should all pile on.
