Left a message with not quite the correct name and claiming I was being tuned over to collections. No names or Bill amount.

The information provided is very vague. I received a call asking for a statement regarding an account they are sending to collections but said a statement is not necessary. They never gave the name of their company or the company the account is with, I do not have an account going to collections.

Received a call stating, “I have a debt in collections.” I do not have any debt in collection, and my credit score is in the 700.

Same as all the other comments. They say it is for a collection, leave vague instructions, say to call back 540-744-1819. This is likely some scammer fishing for people hoping to scare them then use the vague phrasing so that people give more info than necessary and theyll latch onto that.

The fake process server/location specialist scam usually contains:

They mention that they have received a Fax document or some sort of complaint and that there is a pending legal matter or action about to filed against you to create the sense of urgency.  They tell you that they are a “process server” and cannot give you the particulars of the case since the file is sealed. This is simply ruse to get you to call another number (often with a made-up case number) where they will ask for money to “make it go away” (this is actually the same place, they work in teams, one pretending to be the server, and the other usually pretends to be a lawyer).  They threaten to serve you at home or at work.  They tell you that if they serve you at work they need a supervisor, security, or HR person there as a witness, hoping that will cause you to panic over the alleged embarrassment of being served at work.  They also tell you that you will need two forms of ID.  None of which is true.  Process servers do not ever call ahead so that you can dodge them.  Process servers get paid to serve papers, nothing else.  They certainly are not going to pass up a paycheck by telling you that you can avoid being served, they are not going to give you an extra day or even a few hours to get a “stop order”.  Court documents are time sensitive and have to be served within a certain amount of time.  Remember that you can always call the local courthouse to see if there is actually a lawsuit that has been filed against you.

It is incumbent upon them under the law to prove that the debt exists and that you owe it, and (this is the important part) that they have the legal right to collect it.  You are not obligated under the law to prove that you don’t owe or that it is paid.  

Federal law (FDCPA) requires them to send you a letter, email, or text (postmarked in the case of a letter) within 5 days of their first contact that contains their name, physical address, the creditor’s name, and the amount of the alleged debt. Unless they have communicated it to you verbally at the beginning of your conversation. It also must contain the “mini-Miranda” telling you that it is an attempt to collect a debt and that all information will be used for those purposes. The one other important thing that this communication must also have in it is that you have a right to dispute the debt within 30 days of receipt of the letter and if you do so, all collection activity must be stopped until the debt is verified. If and when you get that communication you should immediately send that debt validation letter by certified, return receipt mail.

The call originated from 507-888-7850.
It's likely a phantom debt collector, using phrases that attempt to sound legitimate, although the message doesn't meet any criteria that would make it FDCPA compliant.

I received a message with this number stated as the call back number with a case number. I googled the number and found this site with other people stating that they also received this same call. The message did not state a creditor name or amount that is in supposed collections. I'm glad that I discovered that other people received this same call and that it is likely a scam as I was quite worried about it. I could not recall any creditor that I would owe money to.

Same as above but the phone number they tell you to call does not work and the number they call from is likely a spoofed number

I have copied and pasted the message this scammer continues to leave on my voicemail daily. I have spoken to them and they will not tell you what company they are trying to collect for and as soon as I mentioned the police, they quickly hung up on me!!

Same message as others about placing account in collections and looking for a statement from me. Caller ID indicated the call was from Western Union in Iowa. Several previous similar calls were from different locations across U.S. I have no debt, so this is a scam.

I called the original number that called be even though they called from a different number every day, they are also calling my family because 540-744-1819 didn’t work. They are saying this was a debt from 2016 from a check writing place. They are threatening to put a hold on all my assets until this is paid in full! $260 check is now $3300 . The woman was rude . It sounds like a breach of information has been leaked out from somewhere!
