Industry Tips
Traveling Sales Crews
Most traveling sales crew members are recruited through classified ads that promise lavish pay and exotic travel. Typically, the ads do not provide many details about the nature of the job being offered. Despite company claims, this type of work generally includes selling items, like magazines, perfume, or cleaning products door-to-door. When you agree to take the job, the company will give you a script for your sales talk which you will be asked to memorize. The rest is up to you. If you do decide to attend an interview, be sure to get the following:
1. Name and address of the company and the names of the company's officers.
2. What exactly will you do? Is there any sales expectations or quotas?
3. Working conditions (i.e.: hours, travel, living arrangements, and time off - how much and when)?
4. Is there travel away from home? If so, where? How can be reached? Where will you sleep each night? Who will arrange sleeping accommodations - you or the company?
5. Is there a training period? If so, how long and will there be a pay increase after the training is completed?
6. How will commissions, bonuses, and regular pay be calculated?
7. What happens with canceled orders? What is the company's refund policy?
8. Can you be fined for not showing up at sales meetings or for making friends with other salespeople?
9. If things don't work out and you decide to quit, who will pay for your transportation back home?
10. Will you be working in an area that requires door-to-door salespeople to obtain licenses or to post bonds?
Make sure you take time to read and understand the contract. Don't allow yourself to be rushed or pressured into signing up and watch out for claims stating the company only has room for one person so your response is needed immediately. Get all oral promises in writing and keep a copy of the contract for your own records.
