- D.N.| 6 repliesReceived a message on my answering machine from an Indian man claiming to be an Officer. Could not understand what he was calling about, but sounded very unprofessional. He ended the call with , "If I don't hear from you, all I can do is wish you good luck." Anyone know anything? Please help! Tired of getting harrassing phone calls. Have received one from another # a couple months ago. I pray he doesn't have my soc. sec. #.
- QuestionI also have received calls from the same telephone number......once he left a message indicating he was an "officer" investigation "three" allegations and if I did not respond immediately he would have no choice but to take court action. Then, about 1 month later my daughter received a telephone call from the same guy...indian, identifying himself as an "officer". When she asked him what police department he was calling from he said he was authorized as an "investigative" officer. She gave him a hard time and he said it was extremely important for me to call or serious consequences would happen. She hung up on him. I just got a message yesterday, 3/20/10, from the same guy, who said I needed to contact him at that telephone number or if I didn't, he wished me good luck. Seriously, like I would contact him back????
- SAME HEREI work in an office at the front desk, this same thing happened to me, the person identified himself as Officer David Brewm, he did sound like he was Indian. The guy calls about every other day I'm guessing, the call comes up as PRIVATE, he asks for one of my co workers, I think she has financial problems, like payday loan collection agencies after her. One time they called and I not knowing better transferred the call to my coworker, she listened for a moment and hung up. Since they knew she was there they called her repeatedly all day. I got bored and looked up the number and this page is all i got. I think next time I'll ask more questions, in a non-nosey like fashion of course.

- This Just In...| 1 replyConsumer Alert: Attorney General warns Kansans of debt collection scam
January 29, 2010 -- Attorney General Steve Six is cautioning Kansas consumers about telephone calls from apparent fake debt collectors who are impersonating law enforcement officers in an effort to extort money from consumers. Consumers are warned to not submit payments to these fraudulent debt collectors.
When calling, the scammers most often state they are attempting to collect a debt related to an internet payday loan obtained by the consumer, but which the consumer never repaid. Consumers state they have never obtained such a loan or paid off the loan years ago. The scam artists have most recently identified themselves as ACS, National Affidavit Processing Department and United Financial Crime Division, but may use additional phony names. It appears the phone numbers used by the scammers are “spoofed” numbers, so that the number appearing on a consumer’s caller ID is not the actual number of where the call originated. It appears the calls in question may be originating from outside the United States.
When questioned, the individual calling refuses to disclose the full name or address of the collection agency they claim to represent. These scammers have been able to provide consumers with identifying information, such as the consumer’s social security number, home address, e-mail address, names of family members and the consumer’s computer IP address. Since the callers are able to provide valid personal information, consumers may become confused and believe they are being contacted in regard to a legitimate debt.
If the initial debt collection scam is unsuccessful, consumers have been re-contacted months later with the scammers posing as law enforcement officers or officers of the court. Typically, the consumer is threatened with arrest for fraud or some other fictitious crime unless the consumer agrees to immediately wire money via Western Union. The fictitious officers strive to frighten and confuse consumers into compliance by using legal sounding terms such as “We’re filing an affidavit against you” or by stating a lawsuit has been or is in the process of being filed against the consumer.
A hallmark of each scam has been calling consumers repeatedly at their place of employment. This scam hit home when an employee of the Kansas Attorney General’s Office was repeatedly called both on her cell phone and at work. Despite the employee’s repeated verbal disputes, the caller refused to provide any identifying information to allow her to send a written dispute. The scammer also continued to call her numerous times a day regarding a payday loan she denied obtaining. Two months later, she was again contacted by telephone by an individual identifying himself as an “officer”.
“I denied owing the debt and refused to pay without being provided validation of the debt. I was then told, ‘If that’s the case, I will have local law enforcement come to your place of business and drag you out kicking and screaming’,” stated the employee.
“It is important for consumers to know their rights under the law,” Attorney General Six said. “If a consumer is receiving calls from a debt collection company and believe it is a scam, I encourage them to contact our office immediately.”
Under the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act (FDCPA), collectors are required to send consumers a written notice within five days of the initial contact. The notification should contain information such as the amount of the debt, the name of the creditor to whom the debt is owed and a statement informing the consumer they have thirty days to contact the debtor in writing to dispute the debt or request validation of the debt. In addition, legitimate debt collectors are prohibited by the FDCPA from making false or misleading representations, such as the consumer has committed a crime, implying nonpayment will result in the consumer’s arrest, or using the threat of violence.

http://www.ksag.org/page/consumer-alert-attor ... collection-scam - NFWYI have received several calls from this number and others in NJ. All the same thing about a serious matter that could lead to my arrest. This last time I questioned them on who, what and where on them, I also explained that I didn't understand a word they were saying and asked them if they were calling from a warehouse because it sounded as if they set up a station in a rented garage or locker. This offends them and keeping them on the phone makes them hang up on you. My continued conversations like this everytime they call has put a stop at the moment. I wonder what they would do if told before conversing with them, that this call is being recorded for security purposes and do they agree to continue the call. Might be worth a shot but I do know this, they will hang up on you as long as you stay claim and keep asking them for more information. Wear them out is about the only way to stop them for awhile.
- Caller: Officer John Ryan
- Julie Ann VaccaI received a call at my job from a Jerry Brown and he said either I call him or have my attorney call him and this is the number he gave me is 559-399-0840. I would like to have this stopped immeadiately this is very frightening to me and I would like to have this stopped I have a Heart Condition from Birth and I do not understand these people they have no heart for anyone but themselves and also I have Glaucoma too I do not need any more stress. I would appreciate it if this could be stopped. Also when he called me at my job he sounded very mean.
- scam reportI received a call 4 times this guy the same person and he said he is an LA officer the name of bright nelson
he bothering and scaring of me and my wife he left the messages but he said he send him the letter from the court and he left the number of 559-399-0840. pls. investigate this person.he harrassing me everytime.he live the message of my cellphone - DENI am getting these calls at work. I told him he was a fraud and told him to stop calling my job, he "Officer John Ryan" said he was going to keep calling so I told him to knock himself out. They will also call friends, relatives to try and get to you. Also be advised that payday loans are illegally operating in quite a few states illegally. A lot more states are banning payday loans. They are for the most part loan sharks but with larger interest rates. Legally they don't have a leg to stand on if their operation is illegal in your state. That is why you never received anything on paper (through the mail) only harassing phone calls. I was told that some of these payday loan companies are selling information, SS# banking info, credit info to these slime bags from the Middle East/India trying to take our hard earned money, the little we make. How they continue to get away with this since it has been going on for years, I don't know. If it were an American doing this we would eventually be behind bars. I reported it to the FBI, DA's office, Attorney General's office, only without an address not much can be done as far as Attorney General is concerned. Know your rights. Never send money and never give out personnel info.
