- lcThe IRS scam. Pre-recorded India accent male claiming to be Steve Martin with the Treasury or IRS. They say they can help with your fraud case and how important it is to call them or you will be arrested. Don't call this number and if you have concerns call the IRS directly. www.irs.gov
- Debra| 2 repliesSame as above. Call from "Steve martin" with an Indian accent stating he is calling from the U.S. Treasury and if I don't call 561-692-7472 I will be forced to appear before a magistrate judge for a federal offense. Caller ID states the number is registered to G.W. Financial. Lots of luck loser!! Another scam.
- Caller: G.W. Financial
- Annie| 10 repliesWe received a similar call from 561-692-7472 but I thought he said Steve Miliken. Definite foreign accent talking about unfortunate action by the US Treasury and threatening appearance before a magistrate judge. People who make these calls need to be arrested and deported!
- CelticDragon replies to Annie| 5 repliesThe term 'magistrate judge' is a British term
- BigA replies to CelticDragonWhile that may be true, there are magistrate judges in the Federal system and in certain states. http://www.utd.uscourts.gov/judges/qa_magjudge.html
- ANonieMouse replies to CelticDragon| 3 replies➡️ The term 'magistrate judge' is a British term ⬅️
Our common law legal system and much of the termonology of our legal system is based on British common law as it existed in 1776. (The biggest exception is the state legal system of Louisiana.) There have been many changes since then between our laws, but the artifacts of similarity (and in some cases, the laws themselves!) remain the same.
You don't think that either the Articles of Confederation or the Constitution were written entirely in a vacuum, do you?
Of course, all this has no bearing at all on whether the call being complained about was a scam. Without knowing more about the situation and without offering legal advice, however, the call -- to me, at least -- certainly has a scammy aroma. - CWG40 replies to AnnieThe calls originate in India or Pakistan. Old scam. Been around for awhile. Invest in a call blocker.
- Gunnar replies to ANonieMouse| 1 replyThere's no doubt the call was a scam. That's not even questionable. As far as Magistrates go, I know that in my state (NC) they are used for such duties as setting bonds & issuing complaints. They are not used in civil disputes. I'm not even sure they're even technically called "Magistrate Judges". I've never heard them described as such. I know that they take up space in the parking lot at the court house & their spaces are simply marked "Magistrate". From what I hear they're far more affable than their fully robed "cousins". I hope to not have to find out any time soon.
I'm sure the Indian scammers like to use the term "Magistrate Judge" because they think it makes them sound more "official". That & the fact that they're familiar with the term being that a lot of their legal system is loosely based on that of their former masters. We fought to be rid of the Sassenachs. The Brits just said enough is enough & sailed away from India. I think I'm starting to understand why...
Alska,
Gunnar - CelticDragon replies to ANonieMouseI'm saying you hear the term a lot more across the pond, so to speak. Sounds like someone used that term to sound official. Sorry about that guys-need to no post when half asleep
- yef replies to Gunnar"We fought to be rid of the Sassenachs. The Brits just said enough is enough & sailed away from India." Interesting point, Gunnar! Though your ancestors (Vikings) and mine (Celts) hassled with those pesky Sassenachs through the centuries too, with varying results :-)
- Anonym replies to AnnieI know is was a scam but called the number back anyway -- the guy answered the phone "Department of Treasury"
I told him I was gong to report him to the FBI and FCC and hung up. Then I called again only this time using the *67 feature on the phone and he answered "Hello"
Seems to me that there are enough people complaining about it and he doesn't appear to be taking down the line as they typically do -- why isn't the FCC or someone in the government doing something about this guy? - Leslee WrayI had a message from an Indian speaking mail saying he was from the IRS claiming he was Steve Martin and could help me with a fraud case I have no fraud case and have read other post that says this is a scam I do not want to receive calls from this number anymore and will likely contact the IRS to verify that this is a scam
- BarbaraI have received 2 call from this number in the last hour. Both messages have a lot of static & breaks up several times, but it is from someone named Steve M(?) with a foreign accent stating there is an "enforcement act executed by the US Treasury (unadible) . Ignoring this will be an intentional (unaudible) to avoid initial appearance before a magistrate judge or a grand jury or a federal criminal offense." He then gives his phone number (which is the same number the call came from 561 692-7472) several times more unaudible talk and then "help us to help you. Thank you."
I don't have any issues with the US Treasury......this is a SCAM and the number has been blocked from my phone.- Caller: SCAMMER

- C.D.Don't call back, it's a scam!!!!
- cateSame as everyone else. The recorded message states he is Steve Martin. I actually returned the call and spoke to someone who identified himself as Robert James, Steve Martin's supervisor. While I know that this is clearly a scam, there may be people out there who are actually suckered into this absurdity. if you google the phone number, you will see that it is a Florida based cell phone issued by Verizon.

- Watch OutSame experience as that above. Probably has left four messages on our phone this morning calling in regard to action by the U.S. Treasury. I, too, thought it sounded like he said Steve Martin, which is a joke in itself. Do not call these people!! Report to the FTC. http://www.consumer.ftc.gov/blog/irs-calling?page=1#comment-42015
- Call type: Debt collector
- KimI have had four calls from this number today with the same message. I do not answer, but I am going to figure out how to block him now.
- Caller: Says US Treasury
- Call type: Debt collector
- LeeHave received calls from this number at least six times today. All with the same pre-recording BS about calling them to avoid criminal charges by the US Treasury.
