Just got the same call - very convincing and threatening. Claimed a no bail arrest warrant had been issued and gave a case #. Called the number they left and spoke to a purported IRS employee for around 15 minutes.  By the end of the conversation it was apparent things didn't add up - told him I was calling police and he got off in a hurry

We just got a call from this number as well.  Caller had a heavy accent, possibly of African origin.  Left a voice mail.

Got a similar phone call multiple times from various numbers.  It is a VoIP phone number through Bandwith.com.  I would:
    1.  Go to bandwidth.com and file a complaint.  They know who actually owns the number.
    2.  Go to the FCC and IRS websites to file a fraud complaint.  They are on to these guys.

I would also not answer if you do not know the phone number or name that appears.  I have reported other numbers to the IRS and the caller group keeps changing numbers.

Be careful what info you give.  You could ask for a specific year's Earned income.  Hard to guess.

There is a fairly common IRS or "tax scam" being practiced by scammers on both Canadian and USA residents.
USA tax payers should read this:
    http://www.irs.gov/uac/Newsroom/IRS-Reiterate ... -Telephone-Scam

    Short answer:
The IRS never initiates a contact via phone.
They always send a snailmail first.

    Educational post:
This scam is also described as scam #11, here:
    http://phonehelp.2truth.com/facts_rev.html

Remember to return here, to 800notes.com, after you look at any of the information at that site, either to post more information, or to let us know you avoided the scam, or to read any further information about that number that others may post.

Thanks.  I gave them nothing - just kept asking questions until the story began to unravel.  Filed a report with Treasury Inspector General at www.treasury.gov/tigta    Number they used is non-working now.

Received a call from wireless chalked telephone number, 1-571-335-1891. It was today, 10/20/2014 indicating there was a legal petition notice for tax fraud. We believe this is a scam, otherwise we would have received a certified letter from the Internal Revenue Service.

Do not answer any calls if you don't recognize the number.  Legitimate business does not just call and threaten citizens.
There are lots of loosers out there. Has nothing better to do, besides scamming people.  They need to get a real job.
Perhaps, they just need to be  locked behind bars.

Got a call today.  We went back and forth for 30 minutes. I almost fell for it until he told me to stay on the line, run to the bank and wire money to him.  And that I don't need to discuss this with anyone, even my husband. I told him, that's not how the IRS works. I need some legal documents and they can come arrest me if they'd like.  I'm waiting for the cops now......

Got the same call as the rest of you.  Same threats, same Indian accent.  *This is the 3rd time in 2 days* ~ 2 previous calls over the weekend were pre-recorded messages, BUT today's call was actually a live voice. :-) The call today call was quite fun though, (wickedly said) because I allowed this lady to finish her B.S., allowed her to give me the number to call to find out the specifics, I even read back the number to her twice to make sure I wrote it down right, and then ... I proceeded to let her know that the number she had just given me and the two numbers that were left on my voice mail over the weekend, have been turned over to the Colorado Bureau of Investigation AND the IRS and that they are, at this very moment,  being investigated for FRAUD. I strongly suggested to her that she pack her bags because the law was tracing the call as we were speaking and that SHE was now the one that has a warrant out for HER arrest. I told her, "on second thought,  she probably couldn't get moving quickly enough before they come banging on her door."  She was very quiet for a moment after I said that, so that's when I proceeded to shake her up further and told her that the last I heard, they were very close to her location so she better get off the phone... She immediately hung up. ~ Wish I could have been a mouse in the corner of the room to see her face.

Claimed to be from IRS indicated that charges would be filed against me for tax fraud if I didn't call this number. I did not return the call. I do not have caller ID on this phone so cannot verify that this was the source of the call, however, I was instructed to call 571-335-1891.
