There is a fairly common IRS or "tax scam" being practiced by scammers on both Canadian and USA residents.
USA tax payers should read this:
    http://www.irs.gov/uac/Newsroom/IRS-Reiterate ... -Telephone-Scam

    Short answer:
The IRS never initiates a contact via phone.
They always send a snailmail first.

    Educational post:
This scam is also described as scam #11, here:

Remember to return here, to 800notes.com, after you look at any of the information at that site, either to post more information, or to let us know you avoided the scam, or to read any further information about that number that others may post.

I got a terrifying phone call just now from a man claiming that I owed money to the IRS and that I had one hour to pay it in full or I would have all of my assets frozen. He started the call with requesting my lawyer’s name because I was being taken to court over the money I owed. When I had asked him to explain why I owed money he talked in circles, yelled at me and kept threatening to freeze all of my money. He told me that I had to get a special electronic tax payment thing and stay on the phone with him while I paid, that if I hung up the phone he would send my account into the final stages and my assets would be frozen. He kept yelling at me so I hung up. He called back and I ignored it. I googled the number 571 335 8524 and thank goodness found this page! I tried calling back and it goes straight to a voice mail, which is very unlike the IRS.

I received a call from from this number on Fri. Nov. 23, 2014 claiming to represent the IRS and stating that I owed over $3000 in back taxes and penalties from tax years 2008 - 2012.  He stated that they had tried to notify me by certified mail but no one was ever home and threatened to sent authorities to my home immediately to serve papers.  I called this number back and got the same voice later in the afternoon but said I had the wrong number.  I will be going to my local IRS office Monday to report this.   DON'T FALL FOR THIS SCAM!  He did threaten to have my wages and/or benefits frozen, asserts garnished, and all my creditors notified of my criminal activities.

This man called himself Mark White  but had an Indian accent. Said my accounts are being seized as we speak and a sheriff is arresting both me and my wife. He then said I purposely after there through investigation committed tax fraud and owe 6450 dollars from 2002 till 2012 Which is now 42,000 dollars. He told me to immediately pay the 6450 dollars by giving him my bank account routing number which is on a check.  Or my wife and I will be in jail with in the next few hours for 6 months.. At first I got really scared but then saw the holes. Starting with his name, Mark White. That is not a name with a Indian accent. I asked him for my address and he said he would have to call me back. I don't get why people do stuff like this. I have a head cold so wasn't thinking clear. First and in hindsight. He should have said the call is being recorded because its an attempt to pay a debt. I'm embarrassed I got freaked out but like I said. I have a head cold and not thinking straight. This guy scared me. He was rude and demanding. Also the number was from Virginia so that helped his credibility.
What can we do besides yell here about this. I'm sure older people and some younger people can be fooled. These people are the lowest form of scum that lives in US. Why isn't our local and governmental police doing anything? Is it up to us to take this in our own hands. Should I drive to Virginia and wait for him to leave the building then take him myself to the police. Someone needs to stop these roaches.

Same message as others posted.  Now it is a woman talking. After all the wild threats, ends by saying God Bless you!  It happened a few months ago.  Please people - don't call them.  Just puts fuel on the fire and steals your peace!

Same, same, same. They left me a 10 second voicemail saying something about tax evasion. I called them back and the guy starts going off about having a warrant for my arrest and saying my wife and I were going to jail. He hung up when I told him I didn't have a wife, but what a joke this is. It's disgusting to think that these pricks are probably reaching people's grand parents or the hopelessly gullible.  Buncha scumbags.

i just got off the phone with the trades commission office of fraud prevention, anyone can call them to report an attempted fraud and scam calling. The number is 8773824351. I have been receiving these calls everyday for over a week. One day my 11 year old gears the message and got freaked out! Each time I googled their number to call back and read the comments about the scam. It's basically the same people, who are using burner phones (as per the fraud department). She told me not to call them back, mand that they're aware of the situation. They only leave messages, and they don't ever say whom they are calling about!! That's the number one clue it's a scam. I did call them back an hour ago, before reporting them, and said I was calling from the police department, and the guy took down my "bag" number and put me on hold. He was very rude.

Received phone call on my landline voice mail. Calling about  case against an individual (Michael Manzes ?) with a phone number to call back: 855-661-6300 with a case number 20161 783-3811. She stated that failure to call back would results in a warrant for his arrest. The name given wasn't mine, and it was definitely made from a call center. I could hear voices overlapping in the background.
