Scammer called me this morning and claimed he was from the Treasury of the United States and claimed that they were coming to arrest me if I didnt pay some tax bill. First of all, he had some deep indian accent, called on a federal holiday, claimed his name was Peter Scott, and called me and started the conversation with How may I help you. I told him that I would call the cops myself to meet the person who would be here to arrest me.

Came home from work today to 3 identical, pre-recorded messages, all of which had started running before my outgoing phone greeting was done.  The message started mid-sentence stating it was from <something> Treasury and implying that if I ignored the message I could be facing a grand jury for a federal, criminal offense.  The caller urged me to cooperate with his company so they could help me help myself.

I screen ALL my calls for several reasons; this kind of thing is one of them.  I'm not perfect, but I'm pretty sure I haven't committed a criminal offense, so my next step was to check this site.  Although just a tiny little bit relieved(!), I wasn't at all surprised to see these posts.

It sounds like the message and style varies or has evolved, so I thought I'd describe today's version of this scam.

I received a call very similar to the others reported, but I believe the man said his name was Steve Madden (isn't that a shoe store???). I tried calling back after I saw this website to tell him to NOT call me again, but his voice mailbox was full. Feeling like I wanted this person behind bars or something, I took the time to send an email to the U.S. Treasury Fraud Dept. I don't don't know if anything will come of that, but hey, I tried, and here is the auto response I received from the Treasury Dept:

Your submission has been received by the U.S. Department of the Treasury (the Treasury) Office of Inspector General’s hotline. The Hotline is a one-way portal for reporting allegations of waste, fraud, abuse, mismanagement and other malfeasance in the Treasury.  Our Office does not provide personalized responses to submissions, does not respond to questions or information requests, does not provide document verification services, and does not provide investigative updates. This moron left a message on my machine saying he was from the Dept. of the Treasury and there is a warrant out for me...  When I called the number back he said his last name was "Mathew".... Sorry your accent says "India" big time...
Anyway he rambled about coming to arrest me and when I told him I would refer his call to my lawyer, he hung up.

I received the same damn message, 3 times yesterday.  Steve Madden (def shoe store) who mumbled in his Indian accent how we had a warrant against us and we must call immediately...Kind of freaked me out.
I called the number no less than 30 times today, mailbox full each time. Finally another Indian lady answered, mumbled her name and said her ID 10021.  She said there was legal action against us and did we know it?  Then when I asked who the action was against she hung up.

Now that I've seen all of these posts I HOPE they call back again......when I see the number, I will answer that this call is being traced (my husband is law enforcement)......give them a taste of their own medicine.
    Jerks.

Oh, laughing.  We got a few calls from these guys.  Thanks to the posts here, we knew it was a total scam.  I called them back (heavy Indian accent answering "Office of Legal Affairs from the Department of Treasury") and said I was from a law firm and that they had been harassing my client for several days with their falsified claim and that if they did not remove him from the list, we would be initiating legal action against them, starting with a cease and desist.  It's possible the woman pooped her pants in fear.  I gave her the number to remove (not the name) and asked if she understood what I was saying.  "Yes I do."

Thanks to everyone here for the great comments/feedback on this phone number.  What a bunch of scam artists.

SCAM call from this scum today!  He left 3 messages over 2 hours with same speech pretending to be from the Department of Justice.  Male with Indian or Pakistani accent pretending to be an attorney or officer with the US Department of Justice.  Dialed back (using *67) and got a voice mail stating the same.  FRAUD!

DONT BUY INTO THIS SCAM!!!!! Report to the US Department of Justice and your local law enforcement.

I got the same message. I am retired and have plenty of time. I have called these scum back about 30 times so far leaving indecent messages on their phone mail, usually filling it up so that no one else can call them and leave a message. I plan to do this for some time. It takes little effort but I am sure that its a real PIA for them to have their mailbox filled. Oh-I also reported them to the IRS.

They are at it again....today phone number 573-273-1164 called to say they were with the Legal Dept of the US Treasury saying that I had a warrant out for my arrest for tax evasion from my 2010 taxes. I asked where he was calling from. He said Minnesota. I asked him why there was not a caller ID for the Treasury, but that it did say the call was from Hayward, California!!! He got really upset and hung up on me when I told him I was going to put my lawyer and my CPA on the line with us so they can understand what he is telling me!!!!  (he also had an Indian accent)
