    Eric White from this number calling my cell and work number, claiming to have a case against me for check fraud. Leaving a case number with one of my work fellow employees. No legitmate collection company leaves personal information at your place of employment. This is against the law. Going to make a complaint to the BBB.

    The Federal Trade Commission (FTC), the nation's consumer protection agency, is warning consumers to be on the alert for scam artists posing as debt collectors. It may be hard to tell the difference between a legitimate debt collector and a fake one. Sometimes a fake collector may even have some of your personal information, like a bank account number. A caller may be a fake debt collector if he:

    •is seeking payment on a debt for a loan you do not recognize;
    •refuses to give you a mailing address or phone number;
    •asks you for personal financial or sensitive information; or
    •exerts high pressure to try to scare you into paying, such as threatening to have you arrested or to report you to a law enforcement agency.

    If you think that a caller may be a fake debt collector:

    •Ask the caller for his name, company, street address, and telephone number. Tell the caller that you refuse to discuss any debt until you get a written "validation notice." The notice must include the amount of the debt, the name of the creditor you owe, and your rights under the federal Fair Debt Collection Practices Act.
    If a caller refuses to give you all of this information, do not pay! Paying a fake debt collector will not always make them go away. They may make up another debt to try to get more money from you.•Stop speaking with the caller. If you have the caller's address, send a letter demanding that the caller stop contacting you, and keep a copy for your files. By law, real debt collectors must stop calling you if you ask them to in writing.
    •Do not give the caller personal financial or other sensitive information. Never give out or confirm personal financial or other sensitive information like your bank account, credit card, or Social Security number unless you know whom you're dealing with. Scam artists, like fake debt collectors, can use your information to commit identity theft – charging your existing credit cards, opening new credit card, checking, or savings accounts, writing fraudulent checks, or taking out loans in your name.
    •Contact your creditor. If the debt is legitimate – but you think the collector may not be – contact your creditor about the calls. Share the information you have about the suspicious calls and find out who, if anyone, the creditor has authorized to collect the debt.
    •Report the call. Contact the FTC and your state Attorney General's office with information about suspicious callers. Many states have their own debt collection laws in addition to the federal FDCPA. Your Attorney General's office can help you determine your rights under your state's law.

    Thank you for the information! I did try to get "Eric White" to give me his bussiness' physical address and contact information, however he refused. He was also vague about who he represented, only that it was an on-line loan that I had defaulted on. Not who the loan was with. When I tried to talk with him, he would talk over me. I told him what he was doing was against the law and I would only talk with him through my attorney. He would not take my attorneys number. I know this is a scam, however, what bothers me is that they call my work. I tried to make a complaint with the BBB, I cannot without an address. I will contact the FTC, thank you again.

    Not necessarily. Keep an eye on your checking account, and if you see something you do not recognize, then place fraud alerts on your SS number. Otherwise, you may be putting yourself to a bunch of unnecessary trouble.

    Unfortunately, this type of scam is quite common.

    I received a call from someone named "Dave" claiming to be from Chex System. He asked me to verify the last four of my social which I refused to do. I asked for a callback number to research where he was calling from and I found this site. I called back and asked for the address of his "company" which he refused to give. I asked him to send me debt validation letter and he continued to read off an address I haven't lived at. He demanded I verify personal information again which I refused. He then proceeded to say criminal charges would be filed against me. I called my local authorities to see if there were any felony or criminal warrants or cases filed against me and was told no. This is a big time SCAM! I will be filing a complaint with FTC.

    Sounds like a pieced-together message calling: "This message is intended for Steve Nelson; my name is Dave Hall (?), I am calling from Check Systems. There's been a couple complaints in my office that are tied to your name. (hiccup in recording) We need to speak about these if you wish to get this matter resolved voluntarily. This is stemming from an attempt to withdraw funds from a checking account that did not go through. My number is 585-351-6119. You have been notified." Google number search pulls up a lot of exchanges in Asian countries. I'll be letting my bank know what's going on and have an alert put on my account; all the checks I've issued have already cleared so this is obviously complete s**t. Watch your pockets, people - they're not just using urchins anymore.
