- Steve Lynch| 4 repliesA guy with a heavy Indian accent called to say that I was going to be arrested for not paying my 2010 taxes (which I paid).
- Call type: Prank
- Cindy BAlso got a call from a a guy with a very heavy Indian accent regarding paying taxes and posing as the "US Treasury"
- MB| 1 replyI too got a call from a thickly accented Indian man posing as the US Treasury Department. He said this was the second attempt to contact me and then something about a grand jury and federal crimes and to call him back so I could "help him to help me." This was the first time I had been contacted though. When I called the number back he answered the phone speaking his language and then finally said "May I help you?" in English. I asked who it was and he said US Treasury. Sounds like a scam.

- Alfalfa replies to MBWASHINGTON — The Internal Revenue Service today warned consumers about a sophisticated phone scam targeting taxpayers, including recent immigrants, throughout the country.
Victims are told they owe money to the IRS and it must be paid promptly through a pre-loaded debit card or wire transfer. If the victim refuses to cooperate, they are then threatened with arrest, deportation or suspension of a business or driver’s license. In many cases, the caller becomes hostile and insulting.
“This scam has hit taxpayers in nearly every state in the country. We want to educate taxpayers so they can help protect themselves. Rest assured, we do not and will not ask for credit card numbers over the phone, nor request a pre-paid debit card or wire transfer,” says IRS Acting Commissioner Danny Werfel. “If someone unexpectedly calls claiming to be from the IRS and threatens police arrest, deportation or license revocation if you don’t pay immediately, that is a sign that it really isn’t the IRS calling.” Werfel noted that the first IRS contact with taxpayers on a tax issue is likely to occur via mail
Other characteristics of this scam include:
Scammers use fake names and IRS badge numbers. They generally use common names and surnames to identify themselves.
Scammers may be able to recite the last four digits of a victim’s Social Security Number.
Scammers spoof the IRS toll-free number on caller ID to make it appear that it’s the IRS calling.
Scammers sometimes send bogus IRS emails to some victims to support their bogus calls.
Victims hear background noise of other calls being conducted to mimic a call site.
After threatening victims with jail time or driver’s license revocation, scammers hang up and others soon call back pretending to be from the local police or DMV, and the caller ID supports their claim.
If you get a phone call from someone claiming to be from the IRS, here’s what you should do:
If you know you owe taxes or you think you might owe taxes, call the IRS at 1.800.829.1040. The IRS employees at that line can help you with a payment issue – if there really is such an issue.
If you know you don’t owe taxes or have no reason to think that you owe any taxes (for example, you’ve never received a bill or the caller made some bogus threats as described above), then call and report the incident to the Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration at 1.800.366.4484.
If you’ve been targeted by this scam, you should also contact the Federal Trade Commission and use their “FTC Complaint Assistant” at FTC.gov. Please add "IRS Telephone Scam" to the comments of your complaint.
Taxpayers should be aware that there are other unrelated scams (such as a lottery sweepstakes) and solicitations (such as debt relief) that fraudulently claim to be from the IRS.
The IRS encourages taxpayers to be vigilant against phone and email scams that use the IRS as a lure. The IRS does not initiate contact with taxpayers by email to request personal or financial information. This includes any type of electronic communication, such as text messages and social media channels. The IRS also does not ask for PINs, passwords or similar confidential access information for credit card, bank or other financial accounts. Recipients should not open any attachments or click on any links contained in the message. Instead, forward the e-mail to phishing@irs.gov.
More information on how to report phishing scams involving the IRS is available on the genuine IRS website, IRS.gov.
http://www.irs.gov/uac/Newsroom/IRS-Warns-of-Pervasive-Telephone-Scam - RRSSame situation... from US Treasury, second attempt to contact me and if I did not call back they would turn my file over to a grand jury... really? When I called them back either a heavy accented Indian woman or man answers directly... ok... first clue this is not real, what Government agency has direct lines to the same person to call... no press 1 or press 0 or anything. Lady was good enough to give me her ID number... ok again... what federal agency has people giving out their Government employment number... I asked several questions and they kept asking me for my phone number.... ok ... strike 3... what Government agency only tracks people by their phone number especially if "file" is going to grand jury. I decided to start harassing them and kept calling and they kept hanging up for over an hour... if nothing else I hope I tied up their line so they couldn't bother anyone else. As I work for the government, I will be forwarding this information along the proper channels.
- Heidi L.This guy calls himself "Steve Martin" which really cracks me up. If this is your first call, he may be changing numbers regularly because he called us from a different one a couple of weeks ago.
- Claypipe replies to Steve Lynch| 3 repliesI received four calls from "Steve Martin" on October 10th claiming to be with the treasury department threatening a grand jury inditement if I didn't call back. The number was 619-467-1949. I traced it to La Masa, Ca. This morning, I received two calls with the exact same message, word for word, from the same person only this time the call came from 585-542-5186. These calls came from a Akron, New York location.
I believe this individual is using a Voice over IP service that lets him appear to be somewhere he is not.
This individual speaks with a heavy East Indian accent, does not know the name of the person he is calling and does not indicate an agent badge number. This is a scam.
Go to the U.S. Treasury website and fill out the fraud reporting form, let's nail this turd to the cross like he deserves. - AnnoyedMuch the same as above Total Scam.

- SteveI must have 5 or 6 of these calls over the past 2 -3 weeks
- Bill Jensen replies to Claypipe| 1 replyGot the same call today. Called him back and told him I was Bill Jensen with the FBI and needed to speak to his supervisor. He couldn't hang up fast enough. I also filed a complaint with the Treasury Dept: http://www.treasury.gov/tigta/contact_report_scam.shtml
- LyndaI have had the same experience. Some guy named Steve Martin.... lol funny! Or was it Dean Martin hahaha ... couldn't understand him because of his thick accent. I called back just to mess with them and yes, they answer the phone "US Treasury, can I help you?" Oh yes, sure!!! I pretty much made fun of him and told him he was full of it and to take my number off of their scam list.
- EileenSame as everybody above!
- Call type: Prank
- MollyCall from "Steve Martin" all the same info above, called a week ago from a 630 area code, called it back and it had been disconnected, today received 2 calls from same guy this time 585 area code. Scam.
- Dittsam replies to ClaypipeI too got multiple calls from him. I called back today and hit *67 before I called so my number wouldn't show up. He knew my full name and my address so apparently the *67 didn't work. He told me authorities would be showing up at my door in a couple of hours to arrest me. He did give me his Dept of Treasury "ID" and a case number. He never asked for any payment or money so I'm wondering what the point of the scam is.
- not stupid| 2 repliesI have been calling him back several times using VOIP instead of my home number. One time I said I was from the FBI and he just swore at me, then I yelled out, "Ok, I got a voice print." He hung up. I have called him saying I was from Time magazine asking him how much he scammed today as I know India CID was about to arrest him. I also called to ask him if he was a good Hindu and if his mother knew he cheated people. I then asked how he passed the English proficiency test to work for work with the government. I called over 10 times giving him all sorts of crap. He kept asking me for my phone number so he didn't have caller id. I even told him the joke that they call an Indian with a new phone as a scammer. Needless to say he is getting pissed off. Call them back frequently to embarrass them.
