11/2/15 James allegedly from Windows Support said they had received messages about script errors in the last few weeks (true) and Roger, his supervisor, both with Engllish names but heavy Indian accents, identified themselves at an address in Miami, FL instead of this NY area code, and wanted my Teamviewer password to fix my computer - for free but some problems could cost depending on what else they found.    Supposedly, they had my computer i.d. or "license" number but haven't checked that out yet.. One lie was enough and "James" didn't get me someone with an American accent but just another with the Indian accent.

Persistent and not so nice. Continued to try to get me to buy a spyware/malware protection and made up stuff about how they got our number. I didn't know when I answered the phone that my son hadn't sent in a work or issue order. Heavy Indian accent, and every time I tried to ask where they were calling from or exact information the line went blank and it was very suspicious. Asked for their manager and "John" laughed at me. It wasn't until I had a medical issue and he freaked out did he finally lt me go and fix everything he had done on my computer. Not accepting calls anymore from unknown companies.

Call blocker might be of some help.  Also don't pick up on numbers you do not recognize, or where there are caller IDs that seem odd.  Or where there is no caller ID.  There’s  no way to stop the calls from being initiated. Calls originate in India and Pakistan and they spoof local numbers.

Call from "Windows Tech Support." Heavy indian accent. I've had a lot of calls from these people before so I knew it was a scam but played along for awhile. They are persistent, that's for sure.

Received a call from (607) 223-5230 tonight at 8:15 PM, showing from Owego, New York. I had a pretty good idea of what the call was about so I did answer it. A gentleman that spoke almost NO English tried to tell me that for the last two weeks they had been getting strange data from my computer. I said okay, what do I need to do? He told me to turn on my computer, and when I told him I didn't have a computer, he asked me in kind of a shocked tone, "You don't have a computer?"  And when I again told him I didn't have a computer he hung up on me. Imagine that!!

2/4 7:00pm PST - just received call from this same number, gentleman said he was with Windows support etc...  I said I didn't need or request any support and hung up.  He immediately called back and asked why I hung up?  I told him that I was NOT interested, I didn't need or request any help and NOT to call me again.  He have a very heavy accent that was not American.

Called many times before I picked up finally at 10 pm.  Foreign accent women said computer had been sending error messages.  Passes me to a man with heavy accent that wanted me to type in fn4 and put in a file name.  I told him it was not legal to call so late and that I would need his number to return the call tomorrow.  He persisted to say it take only 5 minutes and do I have the invoice for the computer.  I said yes but I did not believe him to be who he says he is and that I would report him and I hung up.  They called 5 minutes later.  Call coming in is caller id 1800 service.   He gave me 6072235230 as call back number.   SCAM

I just had John from The Windows Department call me and tell me that my Windows is having problems with script errors. Not sure how, but he had my name and phone number. My guess is that the scam company he works for bought a bunch of phone numbers and mine was on the list. I get crap like this frequently.

If you need help with Windows please call John at (607) 2235 230. Yes, you read that right. The number he read to me is incorrectly formatted. It should be 607 223 5230.

I do have to give it to this guy. He was persistent, optimistic, and energetic even when I was telling him that I didn't own Microsoft Windows. He said that he was not with Microsoft but was instead with The Windows Department. Nice attempt at deflection, buddy.

I let him know that I run Linux, do not own Windows, never purchased Windows, and to please put me on their do not call list or I will file a complaint with the FCC. He said that he would put me on the do not call list at which point I hung up.

Go have fun with John. Tell him that Kevin sent you. I suggest that if you decide to call that you have a version of Windows running in a VM that you can revert to a clean version. I use VirtualBox and reverting to a clean slate is very easy.

But my question is, should I have used Windows for Workgroups 3.11, Windows 98, Windows XP, Windows 10, or CentOS 7?

I can confirm that whoever called has a heavy east Indian accent. The number that they are using is likely a proxy number.
