Extortion Scam Related to Delinquent Payday Loans
Washington, D.C.
December 07, 2010 FBI National Press Office
(202) 324-3691
The Internet Crime Complaint Center has received many complaints from victims of payday loan telephone collection scams. Callers claim the victim is delinquent in a payday loan and must repay the loan to avoid legal consequences. The callers purport to be representatives of the FBI, Federal Legislative Department, various law firms, or other legitimate-sounding agencies. They claim to be collecting debts for companies such as United Cash Advance, U.S. Cash Advance, U.S. Cash Net, and other Internet check-cashing services.
According to complaints received from the public, the callers have accurate data about victims, including Social Security numbers, dates of birth, addresses, employer information, bank account numbers, and the names and telephone numbers of relatives and friends. How the fraudsters obtained the personal information varies, but in some cases victims have reported they completed online applications for other loans or credit cards before the calls started.
The fraudsters relentlessly call the victim’s home, cell phone, and place of employment. They refuse to provide any details about the alleged payday loans and become abusive when questioned. The callers have threatened victims with legal actions, arrests, and, in some cases, physical violence if they do not pay. In many cases, the callers harass victims’ relatives, friends, and employers. - An irritated person replies to unknownThis man and same number just called me and gave the same story about being from an attorney's office and that I had to pay a certain amount in order to prove good intentions otherwise the police were going to show up and my place of employment and/or my home and arrest me. At first I didn't realize it was a scam as I have a few unpaid bills and when I got upset he told me that crying wasn't going to solve anything and raised his voice at me telling me to calm down. I asked what company he was representing and he said it was a mother company representing hundreds of payday loan companies but would not be specific. He told me in order to make a payment I would have to go to my nearest convenient store and purchase a money card and I could not use my debit card because my account was part of the investigation. I hope there is a special place in hell for these people because I was legitimately upset and terrified for a minute. Screw these people. I called my local police office to confirm the scam.
- Randy ChristensenI got a call from +1 (620) 842-8118 and it was a very threating voice mail I did contact my attorney and he said forget about it. But I still want the calls stopped.
- Jon2One message from "Pay Day Loans" telling [not my name] that he was approved for an $8000 cash advance and then another message 2 days later from the same number but Daniel mumblemumble from "Law Office" threatening legal action with the same "if you disregard this message, I wish you the best of luck as the situation unfolds in your hands" speech that a previous poster mentioned.
I called them back and they answered as a "Law Office..errr..Attorney General." (yes, literally..the guy answering seemed a bit flustered. It was clearly the same voice that left the original messages, though.)
I told the person who answered that someone had left messages on my line for the wrong person and they just said "thanks. No problem" and hung up. They didn't even ask what number the message was left on, who left it, who it was for or who I was.
Absolutely a scam. Not a particularly well orchestrated one, either. - gerdaneI got the same message, about being arrested, charges against my SS# and that within 72 hours someone would be at my home to arrest me. He then transferred (supposedly) to the restitution office and yes, John Smith was his name. Strong Indian accent with different phone numbers, all within the US, but not. I don't answer any of the calls, if it is a phone number I don't recognize, if I do pick it up, I can from the background noise what it is and hang up. As if we don't have enough to worry about!!
