A man called me from this number and said he was from Capital One. He then said he could offer me a one time only reduced amount for my Capital One account. He wanted me to write a check for half of what I owe. I kept asking him how I knew he was really from Capital One? He said he would give me a number to call. I kept saying that I wanted a letter from Capital One saying that he represented them.

He originally said he was from Capital One and then later said he was working on Capital One's behalf. I went through this a few months ago and wrote to the Vermont department of commerce and they referred my e-mail to the US dept. of Commerce. I received a letter from them outlining how these people worked and that they were not representing anyone. And when they say that Capital One won't work with the firm I have working for me, they are lying.

Do not waste your time talking to these people. Hang up and then use *69 and you will here the number of your last call. You can find their name and address by looking at your credit report under "inquires" or something similar.

Once you have that you can send them a cease and desist letter by certified return requested mail. That gets rid of them. If they contact you again, you can take them to court.
