    Sometimes I answer and use very foul language and call them vulgar names and ask where I can find them to speak with them in person. It is a great way to vent and it also pisses them off.

    I got a call from these people and they left a message stating to talk to a representative press 1 or press 2 to be put on our Do Not Call list. I called them back and it says this customer has a mailbox that has not been set up yet and they hung up

    I received a voice mail with the same automated message. I did not call them back. They did not identify themselves on the voice mail and that is always a red flag for me. Many scam debt companies call in the hope they will speak to an elderly person who may think they have a debt they did not know about of forgot to pay and get scammed.

    It's another of many scams that follow a bankruptcy case! Too many of them out there trying to get rich quick!  They all need to be jailed!

    The Federal Trade Commission (FTC), the nation's consumer protection agency, is warning consumers to be on the alert for scam artists posing as debt collectors. It may be hard to tell the difference between a legitimate debt collector and a fake one. Sometimes a fake collector may even have some of your personal information, like a bank account number. A caller may be a fake debt collector if he:

    •is seeking payment on a debt for a loan you do not recognize;
    •refuses to give you a mailing address or phone number;
    •asks you for personal financial or sensitive information; or
    •exerts high pressure to try to scare you into paying, such as threatening to have you arrested or to report you to a law enforcement agency.

    If you think that a caller may be a fake debt collector:

    •Ask the caller for his name, company, street address, and telephone number. Tell the caller that you refuse to discuss any debt until you get a written "validation notice." The notice must include the amount of the debt, the name of the creditor you owe, and your rights under the federal Fair Debt Collection Practices Act.
    If a caller refuses to give you all of this information, do not pay! Paying a fake debt collector will not always make them go away. They may make up another debt to try to get more money from you.

    •Stop speaking with the caller. If you have the caller's address, send a letter demanding that the caller stop contacting you, and keep a copy for your files. By law, real debt collectors must stop calling you if you ask them to in writing.

    •Do not give the caller personal financial or other sensitive information. Never give out or confirm personal financial or other sensitive information like your bank account, credit card, or Social Security number unless you know whom you're dealing with. Scam artists, like fake debt collectors, can use your information to commit identity theft – charging your existing credit cards, opening new credit card, checking, or savings accounts, writing fraudulent checks, or taking out loans in your name.

    •Contact your creditor. If the debt is legitimate – but you think the collector may not be – contact your creditor about the calls. Share the information you have about the suspicious calls and find out who, if anyone, the creditor has authorized to collect the debt.

    •Report the call. Contact the FTC and your state Attorney General's office with information about suspicious callers. Many states have their own debt collection laws in addition to the federal FDCPA. Your Attorney General's office can help you determine your rights under your state's law.

    Had Some Fun
    I too have been receiving these types of calls, from this and other numbers.  Tonight I thought I'd have some fun.  The caller advised he needed to confirm I was who he said I was by providing the last 4 of my SS#.  I said "go ahead."   He said "what?"  I told him to provide me with the last 4 of my SS# and I would let him know if he was right.  He said he could not discuss private financial information unless I validated the last 4 of my SS#.  I said "go ahead" several more times and he got very upset.   He said in order for him to help me (yea right!) I had to prove I was who was on the debt.  I told him I had no idea who HE was and asked him for the last 4 of HIS SS#.
    I had to keep control so I wouldn't bust out laughing at him.  He got so mad he started yelling, threatened me and hung up.  But for awhile it was fun to mess with him!

    If you do by chance answer, have some fun!  Then tell them you have no idea who that person is they're calling for.
    And I'm marking this call type as Prank Call, because we all know it's NOT a real debt collector.

    Please make sure you report these guys to the FDIC, Atty General and there is an Internet division of the FBI that will also take complaints. I've done it, I have a case number. Report them - don't just post here- so they will stop. They will have to!
