I’m an Enrolled Agent with the IRS (Inactive). IRS does not initiate contacts by phone. US mail only. IRS does not file lawsuits. IRS has enough administrative authority under the IRS Code and related regulations to collect all taxes lawfully due the federal government. Court action, if any is handled by the DOJ and all parties are entitled to legal assistance if it is a criminal matter. But--tax disputes are for the most part civil matters. 90% of all IRS tax disputes are settled administratively. IRS has absolutely no authority to call on local law enforcement for anything. Local law is never involved in IRS tax disputes. IRS does not threaten to involve local law enforcement or to arrest you for nonpayment of federal taxes. IRS has no powers of arrest as related to ordinary tax disputes. Having a deficiency in taxes owed by way of audit is NOT a crime. IRS does not cold call anyone and demand immediate payment of money. IRS does not ask for financial information over the phone. IRS does not accept Green card money paks for payment in any case. No one is prosecuted for ordinary tax disputes. IRS has absolutely no authority over anyone's professional license. Professional licensing is handled by state governments. Yes, levies on property to satisfy an existing tax obligation do occur, but only after a very long period of negotiation. And yes, liens are placed on individuals but usually after a lot of negotiation and a failure to reach a settlement. All determinations of tax liability are subject to appeals. All contacts by the IRS are initiated by US mail. - BnzGot a call claimed I was under Fed Investigation .... total scam from get go.

- AleiaI received a call this morning at 12:47 ... I did not answer since it said unidentified. They left a message trying to say that they are calling because the IRS has me "under investigation" and that I needed to call them for all of the information and what not. I used to work at a tax professional and had to deal with the IRS all the time on behalf of my clients. I knew right away that this is a scam. The IRS will never call or email you. They will send a letter in the mail instead. and their phone number is always a toll-free number.

Our numbers are in the Do-Not-Call Registry. - DuaneI received a call this afternoon. My Call Blocker requires them to identify themselves and to call back. They didn't. Caller ID only said "Unknown Name." Some on here mention it is an IRS scam...I've heard that scam has been increasing in the last 2 months. I will block this number.

- BurglarCalled yesterday 7/1/16 at 2:01pm PST. We live on the "left coast." We were out shopping at Costco so they did leave a message on our answering machine but it was so garbled we could hardly understand it; a man with a heavy foreign accent; something about the IRS and a criminal investigation against us. This is about the 4th one of these we have received over several months and we have yet to be arrested nor charged with anything. We recorded it to play back for our family and friends and have a good laugh and then added their number to our "blacklist" in our call blocker. If they call again from this number the phone will only ring once and cut them off notifying us that another scammer has bit the dust.
