Cryptic message from a scumbag Buffalo debt collector. No company name, just a case filed against my name and social. "This call will serve as your notice."

Here is the voicemail she left: "This is Jennifer Reed with the offices of RMA. I am contacting you regarding a claim that was sent to my office this morning prior to signing off and forwarding this matter to your county for further recovery. I will like to get a voluntary statement of intent from you. Please keep in mind last for the social security number or link to the account. My direct contact number is 844-311-9602. I do not get a voluntary statement of intent or hear from your representation and I will be moving forward on this matter. Best of luck."

First, you should make a complaint at this Federal Agency, and while there you should also read up on how debt collection is supposed to work as well as what your rights in this matter are: https://www.consumerfinance.gov/

Also file a complaint with your State Attorney General's office.

BigA is right. I used to work in collections. What they are doing is using vague or ambiguous language to make it sound like you will get sued. They cannot do that on a message. Most states require that you get at least one (if not several) certified letters before you can even be taken to court. It’s been a while since I’ve worked in collections but that’s how I remember it. Also, depending on the amount involved and the cost of filing in your state it may not be worth it for them to sue. Read up on the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act (FDCPA) it’s straightforward. And definitely file complaints. I will.
