My caller ID showed it was from the U S Government.
I tried calling that number several times only to get a recorded message which said your call did not go through.
    Please try again.

They called 5 times today before I decided to finally answer.

I was told it was from the social security office out of New York and was asked to verify my home address.

The CID was displayed as U S GOVERNMENT with the phone # of 718-557-3000.

The guy was way to happy go lucky and told me that this was not a telemarketer, like I was going to believe that.

He asked me if I was sitting down, and that’s when I really became suspicious.

Keep in mind that I have been waiting for a while for my back pay from SSDI so I felt that I should listen to what he had to say.

Then he started to tell me way more information then any telemarketer/scammer should or would know.
Information like how much my back pay would be, who represented me, what my monthly check would be and how much I would be paying for Medicare.

If this is a SCAM, then there is a major problem with the system.
Going to call Social Security and the company who represented me tomorrow and will post the results.
I am praying that this is legit.

Don't miss out on your approval status? The SSA doesn't notify you by telephone.

Actually I did receive a phone call from SS when I applied for disability.  They called to say I had been approved.  I thought it was odd to receive a call.  Checked around, it is unusual but can happen.

received a call from this caller id and they did leave a message to call 866-226-2306 concerning social security benefits which was applied a few days ago.  I dislike the fact this is not the number of social security but seems legitimate.

Just received a call from this number and was skeptical as well because I had just actually spoken to my local SSA rep not 5 minutes before this call and she was telling me to give them more time to send a letter. I too was expecting back pay and a significant amount.

First she told me her name and that she was calling from SSA and asked if she could verify information so she knows that I am me. That's when I got paranoid and told her so. She said that's ok they would just mail out your verification letter to you then. Someone called last week from a 202 claiming to be from IRS and I knew that was a scam.

I was curious to the amounts and told her I was skeptical because we had gotten a call from a scam IRS person last week. She said she completely understood. I asked her what info I needed to confirm. She said my address DOB and last 4 only of SS #. She also added she was calling from the SSA Payment Center and my rep had just told me that is who would be getting in touch with me although by mail.

I verified my identity and she gave me the back pay amounts and monthly amounts I would be receiving. She told me who my bank was and I didn't have to tell her that. Also when I applied I gave them my cell number and that's the number they called not my home or my FAX line which the IRS scammer called on last week.

This isn't a scam number but it always pays to be careful. She added she would have approved the payment anyway and I would have gotten my money no matter if I verified with her on the phone or not. She said that they do call from time to time if the amount is large in order to let the recipients know to be looking for the deposit into their account. She never verified my acct number or asked me to.

The IRS scammer had my Name, Address and the last 4 of my social whih was scary and I reported that number on the IRS page. People can get that info but just because they have your last 4 don't assume they have the rest of your SS number and never give the entire number out.

I just wanted to put others minds at ease as well. For me it was a legitimate call however these numbers can be high jacked so when in doubt call you local office to verify.

    Hope this helps.

I too was hesitant to provide personal information to the individual who called from this number (which showed up on my caller id as 718-557-3000) and who claimed to be from Social Security.  But I called my local SSA office and they confirmed it was a legitimate call.  When you apply for benefits online, if SSA has questions for you, these are handled by an office in Jamaica, Queens. They were perfectly fine with people calling to check on the number, and had a note in my file indicating that they had contacted me.

I requested the start of the draw of retirement benefits, online.  The webpage asked me to provide updated documentation of my income. Less than five minutes after dropping off that documentation at my local S.S.A. office I received a phone call from 718-557-3000. The caller identified herself as calling from S.S.A. and after I asked, said she was calling from S.S.A. office in Jamaica, NY.  She was calling to advise me that because I delayed benefits beyond my nominal retirement age of 66, I had the option of either taking the amount for which I was eligible by delaying the draw (as I planned), or taking a lump sum of benefits for the past year and have a lesser monthly amount going forward. At first, I felt confident talking to them including confirming personal information. Upon reflection, I grew concerned regarding possible identity theft. Calling back was futile : you get the disturbing message that you have reached a non-working number.  I became alarmed when I mis-dialed a call-back number that I requested in the original call.  When I finally reached a human at a non-local SSA call center, despite a protracted conversation, she was unable to confirm it was an SSA phone number...huh???  At her recommendation I filed a report with the Federal Trade Commission office for identity theft: ftc.gov/idtheft .  After an anxious weekend I got to my local SSA office where I learned that this was indeed a LEGITIMATE call from a real SSA call center (office code C-25), phone number 866.226.2306
From this, I learned that...  the SSA  DOES CALL BENEFICIARIES... that NOT EVERY SSA CUSTOMER REP IS KNOWLEDGEABLE... that phone communication with SSA is difficult (probably on purpose to support security) and confusing...  and that I should not be lulled into a false sense of security in providing personal information over the phone just because I just stepped out of a SSA office.

I too got the 718-557-3000. She didn't ask for my soc. sec. # but wanted birthdate & have my husband verify our wedding date. Didn't ask for my bank information. Told me when I would get a check. Tried to call back, busy. Call the 1-800 Soc. Sec. On hold for nearly 30 min. The lady that answered told me she wouldn't be able to tell me if that number was legit, but she'd look up my local ss office #. Put me on hold & then it went to a survey, after the survey phone went dead. Of course I called again & it was after 7:00. Closed Monday, called today & no representatives are available???? Not put on hold, etc. just not available. So I called the 866-226-2306, stated in some of the above posts, they do answer Soc. Security. She confirmed that someone did call me. (Right date &  time). She said she called 2x this same date. NO, it was just one time. She said it looks like they need to talk to my husband to confirm wedding date, etc.& that he wasn't available.  I said not true she did talk to him. She put me on hold & came back & said it looks like she did talk to him????  I asked  will I receive a letter about this? Yes in 7 to 10 days. Ask her why NY Soc. Sec. is calling me. She said they are handling some of my states applications.  I told her my on line app. still says no decision made. She said it was because I got called on Fri. then & the weekend & then the Holiday. Called my local soc. sec. & male rep. said when they call me it could be a different. He said it was a  ligit call. HOPE it's TRUE!

They called twice , once left a message and once I picked up. They said they were from the SSA and needed more info on my recent application for retirement funds. I told him I could not be sure that he was actually from the SSA ( he had some sort of accent) and he told me to contact my local Social Security Office. I have not done that yet , googled the number first and found out that others are getting the same calls and they are a scam.

Oop! It's not a scam! I called my local office and they had a record of the call from the 718 number and told me that there was definitely something they needed from me . So I called back and the woman was helpful and I answered the questions.... It was so minor that it would not have affected my SSA payments in any way. It all seemed legit!

I,as many was extremely weary about the call. First ,they called & my wife picked up for I was out,she told me someone from Social Security called, being the ever suspicious person that I have become ever since JFK, I decided to do a # check ,& came upon this BLOG,after reading all the comments,I decided that the next call I receive I will pick & give the person the business, which I did,& I'm sorry that I did ,for this is a LEGITIMATE OUT-GOING #,unfortunately I wasn't told ,or advised that someone would call me. Well that being said, when I initially called I told the person I wish to make an appointment to speak to someone, for I had a few questions to ask before filing, but this person was able to answer my questions, but she left out one important note, That she did request an appointment ,which I told her, that since YOU have ANSWERED my questions, there is absolutely NO NEED for me to waste their time , & mine, to go to the office, please DO NOT make a appt.  ,she said fine that she will E-MAIL the online info,& that I can apply as soon as we hang up, but that person failed to  stop putting in for the appt. A failure to communicate, but it does ,unfortunately happens. This started achange of events that, led to the 718 phone call from Jamaica, N. Y. office to verify my appt. for August, but I thought it was someone scamming me,especially after reading this BLOG. Folk's IT IS LEGITIMATE,& I told MR R.@ the Jamaica Office ( which is the processing Department ) to relay my apologies to that sweet,& soft spoken young lady ,that was there to HELP,NOT HINDER.ME,......

So let me get this straight.  You knew who called you and who the number belonged to but you decided to look it up and then come to a site that outs scams and schemes and other criminal activities to post a "how wonderful the people are at this number" report?  A very poorly worded post I might add.

This company is creating fake reviews on various sites. They called on my home phone, caller ID listed "US GOVERNMENT" regarding a recent medicare application, she sounded like a fraud, refused detail unless I 'verified' personal info, didn't have a confirmation number or an ID badge number, just called herself Cassandra. She gave a call-back number I couldn't verify online, SSA couldn't verify number and when I called them back to check, the phone rang 6 times before some random dude picked up. No SSA voice recording, wanted my SSN immediately. I hung up. IT'S A SCAM based out of Queens, NY, don't bother with posters saying it isn't.

BTW, the caller ID number was 1-718-557-300 and the phony call back number was 1-866-226-2306.
