Recorded voice speaks very fast. Says there is a problem with a debt ant to immediately call a number which is then recited.  Call then ends.  Calls at least every 2 days; sometimes more.

You have done some reading and checking and think this is a scam?  You are probably right.  A recorded voice message is NOT a legal notification.  Please do NOT call these crooks back thinking you can "straighten things out, they must have made a mistake".  If you call back or respond any any way, they will be on you like a duck on a june bug.

Block the calls, don't answer unknown numbers or return calls to unknown numbers.  Scammers will keep changing numbers, so be aware of that.

This is a common ploy by criminals masquerading as debt collectors who are attempting to extort money from people by scaring you into believing that you will be criminally charged, go to jail, lose your driver’s license, have wages garnished, be sued, and a variety of other variations on this,  all for an alleged or nonexistent debt.  One of the tricks they use is to call your work place, friends, or relatives repeatedly in an attempt to shame you into paying.  They also use the “process server” ruse who calls and claims he is going to serve you, but then says you could avoid it by calling another number

Federal law (FDCPA) requires them to send you a letter (US MAIL ONLY) within 5 days of their first contact that contains their name, physical address, the creditor’s name, and the amount of the alleged debt.  It also must contains “mini-Miranda” telling you that it is an attempt to collect a debt and that all information will be used for those purposes.  The one other important thing that this letter must also have in it is that you have a right to dispute the debt within 30 days of receipt of the letter and if you do so, all collection activity must be stopped until the debt is verified.
Read up on your rights here, get template letters to send and also make a complaint at this government site:  http://www.consumerfinance.gov/

Also file a complaint with your State Attorney General's office.

Debt collector trolling.  Called looking for someone with name similar to mine.  Asked for acct number and told them I had no acct with them.  Asked for my social and I told them I don't give it out to strangers.

Mid Atlantic Finance Co. - called looking to speak to the person "in charge of capital"... It appeared to me they were fishing for the name of the person to speak to so they could call back later and get connected directly to them. I advised them now is not a good time, and I wouldn't be able to divulge who that might be. They said they'd try back at a later time.

Has been calling me for eight months. I blocked the call, but they still leave messages at least once a week. I have never called them back, and never will. Person who leaves message asks for a person with the same first initial of my last name.

Your wives phone could be new, but phone number could be somebody's  old number.
So, they keep calling same number.
Is easy, your wives new phone has feature Rejecting list or Ignore or something like that, depends of the phone, just use it, it feels good.

Asked to speak with my son (who's not here) and said he's with "Mid Atlantic." However, it comes up on the caller ID as Perozo, Tina J. Fishy. Very fishy. The 800 # he gave to call is 800-793-9661. I do NOT trust any caller whose name and caller ID info do not match.
