They want you to pay again and if you answer and talk to them they never have any details of original debt. They never leave a message . If you don't answer this number they have others my advice is if you don't recognize the number don't answer it check your credit score. Portfolio Recovery Associates AKA PRA

Web page with contact information: http://www.portfoliorecovery.com/contact_us.html
BBB page with 1,320 complaints, a government action from the State of new York, and yet they get an A- rating? http://www.bbb.org/norfolk/business-reviews/d ... olk-va-51000164
Bizapedia has them as a Delaware Corporation started in 2007 as opposed to the information on the BBBB page that says 1996:

Federal law (FDCPA) requires them to send you a letter (US MAIL ONLY) within 5 days of their first contact that contains their name, physical address, the creditor’s name, and the amount of the alleged debt. It also must contains “mini-Miranda” telling you that it is an attempt to collect a debt and that all information will be used for those purposes. The one other important thing that this letter must also have in it is that you have a right to dispute the debt within 30 days of the date of the letter and if you do so, all collection activity must be stopped until the debt is verified.
Read up on your rights here, get template letters to send and also make a complaint at this government site: http://www.consumerfinance.gov/
Also file a complaint with your State Attorney General's office. - Deanna| 5 repliesI made payment a arrangement with these guys (before I knew they were a scam) on an old debt that they had very specific details and accurate information about me and the payments I had completed. They failed to collect the new payments according to the agreed schedule, but that's not all. I began receiving calls from them OFFERING me an approved loan that I "applied for" while at the same time calling me and making demands for payment of this other loan for which they were the official debt recovery agents. I certainly DID NOT apply for any loans. So which is it? Do I owe them money or do they want to give me money? Right? But all that isn't even including the abusive behavior, threats, and sharing of my information with unauthorized friends and family members. They literally called my brother AFTER I TOLD THEM NOT TO TALK TO HIM OR CALL ANY OTHER NUMBER TO REACH ME and told him that I'd made a payment arrangement with the and they were threatening him with turning me in to the police if I didn't pay them.

- Amy replies to unhappy receipant| 3 repliesIf these guys are hounding you with no merit, do what I did. Ask for verification that it's your bill. Be nice, be business like and no matter what do not lose your cool. I asked the right questions and won a lawsuit last year and have another one pending right now because I asked the right questions and wrote down their answers which were usually illegal and when THEY don't comply with what I ask for and I write down every time and day they call me,I call my attorney and give them the details and get advice as to what I should or should not say. Then let them be the judge whether or not there is a case or not. Chances are there is. The practices they use are wrong and that's what I am fighting against.
- Amy replies to Deanna| 2 repliesWhat they are doing is illegal. Do you want my law firm's name? I've won a lawsuit last year and mine wasn't as blatant as what they are doing to you. The lawyers do everything and are wonderful. It's about bad practices by debt collectors. You have a good case!

- LockheedeCalled today, left no message. I have received calls from them several times from several different numbers and they never have left a message.
When my grandmother died 7 years ago, I took my inheritance and paid EVERY bill I owed off, so they shouldn't be asking for a single damned thing.- Caller: Portfolio (per other users comments)

- Not true replies to ahjohn66| 5 repliesThey aren't as legit as you think--They buy debts that are past the statue of limitations. They try to collect on debt that has been dismissed via bankruptcy. They use scare and intimidation tactics to collect.
- Alfalfa replies to Not trueSeconded. Any organization who attempts to harass an elderly and sick person (as they did an immediate family member of mine who has since passed away), into selling his life insurance to pay for an unvalidated and out-of-statute debt is NOT legitimate.
- V3Called around 4pm. Did not leave a message.
