    Comcast log:  Wednesday | September 2, 2015 | 8:44 PM CDT | 41 seconds

Caller ID showed:  Pompano Beac FL, (754) 307-0408, POMPANOBCH, FL

Said he was from the Fraternal Order of Police, Headquarters based out of Tallahassee. Rehearsed smooth delivery; he immediately informed me this call would be recorded; which sounded unusual: attempt to psychologically intimidate me by telling me I am being recorded, then ask for money?  My gut feeling: a scam because this number has no history on the net as a legitimate charity.

I interrupted his delivery to ask "why aren't entire cities hunting him down and hitting him in the face REALLY hard", and then I hung up. I have to wonder if he is taking advantage of the recent rash of law enforcement killings.

I just got a call from some guy with a very smooth, well rehearsed script. First, he asked for "Thomas". I told him he had the wrong number. He then replied, "No. I don't have the wrong number, just the wrong name." He then tried to state that he was with the Fraternal Order of Police based out of Tallahassee. I quickly interrupted him and stated, "No...You do have the wrong number! This number is on the Do Not Call List and you are now in violation. Do not call this number again or you will need the Police when I hunt you down!" I then hung up.

Called at  8:10 AM and said he wanted to talk to Robert meaning he had my name probably as sometime I had donated to a policemans fund who sold my name to the racketeers. I told him to remove me from his G Dmn'd list but they continue to call from another phone number. I will donate to the policeman's fund only when they accept my money in person.

Area code is from Florida but from the Hollywood/Fort Lauderdale area on the east coast not the panhandle.  I agree with all the above  --  now that the holidays are here, all the scammers are coming out of the woodwork.  Only give to those charities that you know and trust.

You're an idiot... This is a legit number and organization, they are not scammers for a change.  If you really knew about the Do Not Call list rules, you would know that charities and politicians are exempt and are allowed to call.  However, if you do ask them to not call you again in the future, they are supposed to respect that request.  The reason you see it coming from a 754 area code is that each county takes a portion of their call list to solicit donations.  If they really were scammers they certainly wouldn't be displaying their number on the Caller ID.  If you still don't believe they are legit, you can call the FOP office in Tallahassee.  99% of the calls we get are scams, this is not one of them.

    Um ...

We can no longer believe the phone number we see on our caller IDs (CID) belongs to the person who called!  The bad guys are now using easily accessed technology to "spoof" the CID numbers, so their real number does not appear.

The problem has gotten so bad, the US government actually passed an Act, called "The Truth in Caller ID Act of 2009", making such spoofing illegal.  See http://www.fcc.gov/guides/caller-id-and-spoofing
    for more information.

The FCC adopted that Act in June, 2010, stating that violators could be fined up to $10,000 for each violation.

However, the bad guys are ignoring this law ... after all, they are criminals, and that is what criminals do.  Although we now have a "law" against spoofing, it is very difficult to enforce it.

So, if you see a CID number on your phone when you are called by some scammer or telemarketer, it might not belong to the scammer!  It might be the number of some unsuspecting third party ... or, it might be one of those numbers that charge $25 (plus about $9 per minute) if you call it back, or the number might not be "real" at all.

Sorry, you are the idiot.  When they call ask them what percentage of the funds goes to a charity and what they keep for administration.  You may be surprised, especially if they answer you.  Also, check with your local police department....why in the world would you want to donate to a voice over the phone instead of your local law enforcement?  Donating locally keeps the funds in YOUR community.
