    I received a call and the  answering system picked up.The female caller left a detailed message to call her back at 1-757--542-3520 concerning a letter received in her office.  When I called back after hours, an answering machine said there was no one in the office to pick up my call and to leave a message.  The following day, I called again and the woman who picked up asked  who I wanted to speak to.  Then I asked her what company was this and she said Vance and Hoffman and the person she wanted  to speak to was named Yvette (not my name). After a man in the background coached her, she said my number would be removed from her calling list.

    My employer, my employers "order desk", my son, and both my work cell number and personal cell number from this number and also from 757-542-3509. The lady, left messages when possible and actually contacted our Plant Manager relaying the information that she had some documents for me to sign.

    Is this sort of mass calling for who knows what legal? I don't want to spend money on an attorney, but, if it places my job/reputation at work in jeopardy feel I have no other options.

    Any recommendations out there?
    Thanks

    I keep getting this call saying they have my paper work on their desk. I called back but they wouldn't give me any information unless I was the person they were looking for. I refused to give my name because they wouldn't tell me what this was. No company name.. Nothing. the number is saying it's from Virginia (757) 542-3509. I had to add their number to my rejected callers on my phone because they call atleast once a day...

    See if you can get call blockers for all those phones.

    * File a complaint with the FBI on their Internet Crime webpage     http://www.ic3.gov/default.aspx
    * File a complaint with the Attorney General for the state you live in
    The more information and complaints there are, the better the chance of getting these criminals to stop (or at least reduce the frequency).
    They continue to bother  you, tell them you are going to the police to make a complaint of extortion.

    Caller left a message this morning looking for my husband.  The lady said "i hope you understand what you are doing" along with the "paperwork came across my desk".  I'm glad I can read these "who is calling you" posts.  They help pick out the scammer real quick.

    I also received a call from this number and a female voice said I am calling because "SOME PAPERWORK CAME ACROSS MY DESK" ...She asked that I return her call?? Not a chance~~ If they want to contact me they can do it via United States Mail ..I don't answer calls I don't know ~~ When will the madness end?? Seems like a scam to me seeing all the people that have commented saying the same thing was said to them! Guess it's time to block another number!

    The Federal Trade Commission (FTC), the nation's consumer protection agency, is warning consumers to be on the alert for scam artists posing as debt collectors. It may be hard to tell the difference between a legitimate debt collector and a fake one. Sometimes a fake collector may even have some of your personal information, like a bank account number. A caller may be a fake debt collector if he:

    •is seeking payment on a debt for a loan you do not recognize;
    •refuses to give you a mailing address or phone number;
    •asks you for personal financial or sensitive information; or
    •exerts high pressure to try to scare you into paying, such as threatening to have you arrested or to report you to a law enforcement agency.

    If you think that a caller may be a fake debt collector:

    •Ask the caller for his name, company, street address, and telephone number. Tell the caller that you refuse to discuss any debt until you get a written "validation notice." The notice must include the amount of the debt, the name of the creditor you owe, and your rights under the federal Fair Debt Collection Practices Act.
    If a caller refuses to give you all of this information, do not pay! Paying a fake debt collector will not always make them go away. They may make up another debt to try to get more money from you.

    •Stop speaking with the caller. If you have the caller's address, send a letter demanding that the caller stop contacting you, and keep a copy for your files. By law, real debt collectors must stop calling you if you ask them to in writing.

    •Do not give the caller personal financial or other sensitive information. Never give out or confirm personal financial or other sensitive information like your bank account, credit card, or Social Security number unless you know whom you're dealing with. Scam artists, like fake debt collectors, can use your information to commit identity theft – charging your existing credit cards, opening new credit card, checking, or savings accounts, writing fraudulent checks, or taking out loans in your name.

    •Contact your creditor. If the debt is legitimate – but you think the collector may not be – contact your creditor about the calls. Share the information you have about the suspicious calls and find out who, if anyone, the creditor has authorized to collect the debt.

    •Report the call. Contact the FTC and your state Attorney General's office with information about suspicious callers. Many states have their own debt collection laws in addition to the federal FDCPA. Your Attorney General's office can help you determine your rights under your state's law.
