- Marlene| 3 repliesTHIS IS A SCAM!!!!!!!!!!! You will receive a call stating that you have a pending legal matter and that you need to take action to rectify this situation. They identify themselves as either IRS or US Treasury Department. They will tell you that there was an error in your taxes that they have tried to contact you via mail and e-mail. They have your address and probably your e-mail. They will threatened unless you make payment the warrant will be effective and the police will be coming by to arrest you. In the meantime if you're on the cell phone a message in red and yellow as if you're receiving an emergency call will begin to tell you that those are the officers trying to locate you and if you answer they will find you and arrest you on spot. They ask you to go to facilities such as Walgreens, CVS, Dollar General etc to purchase ITUNES prepaid and they will be with you all the steps. At the end I purchased 8 prepaid cards for a total amount of $4,000 gave them the number and within minutes they had redeemed them obtaining my money. They will isolate you and will not allow you to put them in speaker because they don't want anyone to hear the conversation. PLEASE DO NOT FALL FOR THIS. I am a professional person not easily taken nor gullible but yet they found my weakness which is my job and the thought of the authority coming in and arresting me was HORRENDOUS. I truly fell for this once they stated the police officers will be coming in to apprehend me. DON'T FALL FOR THIS. THE IRS WILL NEVER ARREST YOU FOR TAXES. Call your local authority if you receive this call.

- John replies to MarleneI'm sorry to hear about the scam and costed you $4,000. They called and asked for unknown name. I told them that the one they're looking for is not mine. So they asked what's my name and I told them "my last name is YOU and the first name is [***]". So they hung up.

I’m an Enrolled Agent with the IRS (Inactive). IRS does not initiate contacts by phone. US mail only. IRS does not file lawsuits. IRS has enough administrative authority under the IRS Code and related regulations to collect all taxes lawfully due the federal government. Court action, if any is handled by the DOJ and all parties are entitled to legal assistance if it is a criminal matter. But--tax disputes are for the most part civil matters. 90% of all IRS tax disputes are settled administratively. IRS has absolutely no authority to call on local law enforcement for anything. Local law is never involved in IRS tax disputes. IRS does not threaten to involve local law enforcement or to arrest you for nonpayment of federal taxes. IRS has no powers of arrest as related to ordinary tax disputes. Having a deficiency in taxes owed by way of audit is NOT a crime. IRS does not cold call anyone and demand immediate payment of money. IRS does not ask for financial information over the phone. IRS does not accept Green card money paks or Itunes cards or similar for payment in any case. No one is prosecuted for ordinary tax disputes. IRS has absolutely no authority over anyone's professional license. Professional licensing is handled by state governments. Yes, levies on property to satisfy an existing tax obligation do occur, but only after a very long period of negotiation. And yes, liens are placed on individuals but usually after a lot of negotiation and a failure to reach a settlement. All determinations of tax liability are subject to appeals. All contacts by the IRS are initiated by US mail.
