Not that old a story though ... only 6 months ago ;). Good article however. What I found most telling was this part:

"Scams are based on a combination of pushy sales tactics, a load of lies and a few half-truths. Callers pose as computer support technicians, frequently from Microsoft itself, and try to convince victims that their computer is infected, often by having them look at a Windows log that shows scores of harmless errors. At that point, the sale pitch starts, with the caller trying to convince the consumer to download software or let the "technician" remotely access the PC."

Well, I had spent a couple of hours on a barstool drinking margaritas, tomorrow will be beer.  Right now, 6 months seems so far away, lol.

Called my cell phone number.  Voice is so familiar that once I heard it during dinner and before he said anything I asked "Is this Microsoft Techncal Support?"  He said yes, I said that I didn't need any support that evening and hung up.  Today it was on the cell phone while I was driving, and I said that he had just called a cell phone and I was repotring him to the FTC.

FYI, this is a scam to get them to put a worm on your computer that lets a bot control it for rent to criminal enterprises for sending SPAM from your computer, stealing your identity, etc.

From posts here, these guys have been using this number for two years.  If even a fraction of us reported them to the FTC this phone number would be long gone by now.  If the number that they called is on the Do Not Call registry, go to https://www.donotcall.gov/ to file a complaint.  If not, go to https://www.ftccomplaintassistant.gov/Getting ... 26panel1-5#crnt to make your complaint.

I received  call about 13:30 today from a lady with the same story. " My name is (   )from Microsoft and your computer is downloading viruses and Trojans. Could I please turn it on so I can help you". I replied that if it was downloading these then my computer must be turned on. Do you have my IP address then she hung up her call. I had not turned on my PC today at that time. These are no brainers scams. Up to no good.

Next time I will ask if she is wearing the green dress and matching drawers in Hindi language. She had an obvious East Indian accent of English.

Answered the phone and a female voice with an accent, possible Asian of some kind, told me that "I'm calling about your computer, mmkay?" I just said, "No. Thank you."  I always say "Thank You", I'm a nerd like that. What nonsense. Oh yes, let me give you access to my computer RIGHT NOW! NOT. Third stupid scammer call this morning. They come in waves. SO intrusive.
