Consumers across the country report that they're getting telephone calls from people trying to collect on loans the consumers never received or on loans they did receive but for amounts they do not owe. Others are receiving calls from people seeking to recover on loans consumers received but where the creditors never authorized the callers to collect for them. So what's the story?

The Federal Trade Commission (FTC), the nation's consumer protection agency, is warning consumers to be on the alert for scam artists posing as debt collectors. It may be hard to tell the difference between a legitimate debt collector and a fake one. Sometimes a fake collector may even have some of your personal information, like a bank account number. A caller may be a fake debt collector if he:

is seeking payment on a debt for a loan you do not recognize;
refuses to give you a mailing address or phone number;
asks you for personal financial or sensitive information; or
exerts high pressure to try to scare you into paying, such as threatening to have you arrested or to report you to a law enforcement agency.

If you think that a caller may be a fake debt collector:
Ask the caller for his name, company, street address, and telephone number. Tell the caller that you refuse to discuss any debt until you get a written "validation notice." The notice must include the amount of the debt, the name of the creditor you owe, and your rights under the federal Fair Debt Collection Practices Act.
If a caller refuses to give you all of this information, do not pay! Paying a fake debt collector will not always make them go away. They may make up another debt to try to get more money from you.

Stop speaking with the caller. If you have the caller's address, send a letter demanding that the caller stop contacting you, and keep a copy for your files. By law, real debt collectors must stop calling you if you ask them to in writing.

Do not give the caller personal financial or other sensitive information. Never give out or confirm personal financial or other sensitive information like your bank account, credit card, or Social Security number unless you know whom you're dealing with. Scam artists, like fake debt collectors, can use your information to commit identity theft – charging your existing credit cards, opening new credit card, checking, or savings accounts, writing fraudulent checks, or taking out loans in your name.

Contact your creditor. If the debt is legitimate – but you think the collector may not be – contact your creditor about the calls. Share the information you have about the suspicious calls and find out who, if anyone, the creditor has authorized to collect the debt.

Report the call. Contact the FTC and your state Attorney General's office with information about suspicious callers. Many states have their own debt collection laws in addition to the federal FDCPA. Your Attorney General's office can help you determine your rights under your state's law.>

yes. i am recieving call too. i ask to send me address of the both company, but they refused, they said we dont deal with the public. well if you say that i owe something i want to know who are you and what bis your legal business address so i can investigate

I recently received a phone call from this phone number as well. I already contacted the state attorney's office and reported this phone number. Also they are in combination with an office in California. I reported both phone numbers.

I received a call from 786-752-3603. The person I spoke too said that if I did not paid they will take me to court. The guy I spoke too did not wanted to give any information either. They are also calling from a California phone number 424- 248-8509..this is a scam also.

Yes i got a call from private number and also from 786-743-1381 Rand he said I missed a deposition phone call for court hearing and that I needed to call james collins at 4242488509 immediately to get new paperwork sent to me.THE NAME OF THE COMPANY IS LSAG LLC AND THE ADDRESS IS 7077 ORANGEWOOD AVE, sTE # 125 GARDEN GROVE, CA 92841 AND THEIR PHONE NUMBER IS 888-256-6985. I already reported both for the FSC.

They claim they are with the clerk of court; however they can't tell you which court.  Only that their client needs to speak with us asap.  This is just a collection agency using threats.

I received a call from Bill Brooks, he said he is an attorney and is calling to peruse criminal or civil actions against both me and my wife. He left this on my voice mail (pure fdcpa violation : disclosed personal information and  was not sure who's voicemail it was since our names are not present).

He also called and left a message saying he was calling from the law firm of CAR & Associates. (again they are not a law firm), just an old school collector trying to hit commissions by using scare tactics. Kind of silly when I think about this, I am a commercial / consumer collector and have been doing this for over 15 years. People I traced the company down and below are the phone numbers and address...

He has been harassing me.  He will not give any information but did state that he hopes I enjoy getting arrested at work.  He has also called at my place of employment even though I told him to not call me at work- per FTC.  He also refuses to tell me what I owe or who the debt is with.

YES !!! They are a scam these people just want to collect $$$ eventhough you dont owe it ....be careful DO NOT PAY anything they try to scare you with this lawyer stuff its  all fake as them ....what I noticed is that they change their tel # often to trick you
at least they are not getting anything from ME ...
