Called claiming to be Avis Budget Group.  Claimed I owed $3516 for damage to a rental car.  Had inside info, including a real contract number and date for one of my rentals.  However, when I called Avis main number, they were able to confirm this was a scam call.

Avis reported in August 2024 that they had discovered a data breach.  Depending on when you rented the car the scammers may be using data from that.
Also, do you always make it a point to take that folder with your rental agreement paperwork with you when you turn in the car, or just leave it behind?  If the latter, someone with access to the car after you (like the cleaning staff) could find it and use it in such a scam against you.  When renting cars, I have often found previous renters paperwork behind the sun visors, in the center console or in the glove box (goes to show just how well they clean them) which I end up shredding (along with my own paperwork).

Same experience, pretending to be AVIS budget group collecting on a repair bill on a rental car from this summer. Tried to get me to give them my credit card number by claiming the bill was due that day. Had my real rental agreement number and incident report number. I hung up and called the AVIS customer service number on the AVIS website, confirmed that I had not balance due and that the claim was closed.

Exact same experience with the scammers calling for rental car damage. Incredible the FBI is not doing anything about this.

Have you brought this to their attention?  They cannot act on things they are not aware of.
