Kelli, you are sadly FOS for making such assumptions, but if YOU want to just pay somebody who calls you over the phone any amount that they say, to just GO AWAY & leave you alone, good luck with that.  Most of us do not choose to allow ourselves to be made fools of unscrupulous collections agencies.  By the way, it's kind of nice to review the EOB (explanation of benefits) from your insurance company, BEFORE you pay any service provider.  Afterall, when the numbers don't jibe, you need to be scrupulous about that "bill" that shows up (or calls up & says "press 9 now to pay the outstanding amount") so you don't pay some scammer & be taken over BS billers... I don't care WHO you voted for, you need to look out for your own best interests & do NOT expect our government to do that for you.

You are not obligated to take any such measures of sending your relative's death certificate. Besides, you put their identity at risk for ID theft due to information contained upon it!  Also, more importantly, relatives are not responsible for the medical bills unless they up-front agreed to pay with the providers of same.  The estate of a passed on loved one is where such demands need to be directed.  There is formulae under which such debts must be considered before paying them.  Just so you know...

First off, sounds like a scam. Secondly, if it isna scam, then depending on what state live in, statue of limitations have set in. I know In Tennessee  SOL is 6 years. After SOL has expired, they CAN NOT LEGALLY GO AFTER YOU (TAKE YOU TO COURT, GARNISH WAGES), if they do, sue  them

Same as others here. Received a recorded message asking to call them.  They identified themselves as NPAS on behalf of Medical City Dallas.  I called and they started asking all kinds of questions so they could "pull up my account". When they asked for my social security number, I said this conversation is over--send me a bill in the mail if I owe something. Over two months later, I still have not received a bill and they continue to leave messages. There is something fishy going on. If I really owed them money wouldn't they just send a bill?  I have blocked this number.

I got a call from this number about a month after paying ALL my hospital bills after having my son. I never got an opportunity to talk with a representative, yet they wanted all this personal info. Going to call the hospital on Monday to see if they know anything.

This number asked for private information when I called this company back. I was not given the option to speak with a representative. This call occurred yesterday, now over a month since I payed off any/all bills for my son (born last year) and myself & husband.

NPAS is a collections/billing company that quite a few medical facilities contract with. They use a robot caller and if you don't stay on the line for at least 10 seconds it seems, you just get dead air and assume a crank call. NPAS agents evidently are not trained in guarding our security as they do ask for ssn, bd, dl numbers, etc. Not divulging personal information to a stranger over the phone is common sense today.

I only have a few very small bills (less than $100) and the hospital thinks they made a mistake on the medicare billing and to not pay anything yet. From this I must assume that there is a significant lag in synchronizing NPAS database with the medical folks and that NPAS is looking at dated information.

I've only talked to one agent at NPAS and she was pleasant, but she did want me to provide my ssn and birth date which I politely refused to do. What I did politely tell her was that I would call my hospital's billing department to see what was going on. The hospital acknowledged that NPAS was their contractor and apologized for the inconvenience.

Since it appears that NPAS has a colorful reputation to say the least, I recommend that folks who do not wish to deal with them to simply block or not answer NPAS calls and instead work directly with the medical provider's in-house billing folks. Also if you think NPAS is harassing you, your first step should be to talk to the medical provider and let them know what is going on.

Or, make them follow the law, which has been discussed several times here, most notably on page 8.  You see, you can actually learn things by reading.

Had a voice mail on my work phone  around 6 PM last night.  The message said I should call Stone bridge Medical Center at this number concerning an urgent matter.
I called the number  and got NPAS. I kept punching "0" until I got a CSR. Turns out they are dunning me for a bill in someone else's name at a Hospital clear across the country. If they aren't scammers then they must be the most incompetent debt collectors ever!

All debt collectors are scammers and incompetent.  They generally hire felons who can't get a job anywhere else.

Exact same thing happened. I got a call and let it go straight to voicemail if I don’t recognize the number. Well it did and they stated they were NPAS calling on behalf of Medical City Dallas. Only difference is, I would never call them back for legally if I owe anyone anything, they have to send me a bill in the mail. So yes I do owe the hospital money which I’ve been paying per our agreement, but I never bat an eye at any of these calls period. For the legally must send snail mail then they can call and until I see that, I just roll my eyes and move on.

I got a call from this number, said hello and they hung up.

I called them back and told them to add me to their do not call list. They said they needed my name because my number pulled up many people.

Insisted I just wanted to be added to their do not call list and then they told me sorry I can't even pull up this number.
