I got the following unsolicited text from 98019 on Dec. 28, 2010:

Official Reward Notice: Call 8002613811 now to claim 1000 free music downloads with Coupon Code 2325! Keep Music text alert account active. txt stop 2 end

I texted stop and got the following message:

You will receive no further messages from us. Questions? Call 8663098187

I called the 866-309-8187 number. It instantly said "Thank you for calling customer service" then put me on hold and had me listen to muzak while I waited for "the next available agent." After being on hold for 3 minutes, I got a recorded message saying "Hello. Our records show that you registered with one of our online partners. To stop receiving messages from us simply reply with stop. Thanks for calling. [BEEP]" The the automated message closed the line, ending the call.

I was not satisfied with that because I did not know the name of the company, so I called the 800-261-3811 number. There I got another recorded message saying, "Congratulations! You've been selected to receive 1000 of the hottest music downloads from Free Music Connection. So help FMC celebrate the launch of its new website by downloading your free songs. There are no strings attached and nothing to buy. All you need to do is press the number 1 now to activate your VIP account. To be removed from future offers reply stop to the message you received." Curious, I pressed one and it told me my account was already activated, I guess I didn't need the special code after all. Then it told me I was selected to receive a free $20 Pre-paid Visa gift card from a company called Great Fun, a discount and rewards program.

It all sounds like one gigantic scam to me. I just wish I knew how they got my number.
