I have been receiving these same calls on my phone but figured it was because I went over my limit.  The timing was appropriate.  I finally got around to calling them back when half way through the phone call I became skeptical.  I hung up and looked it up online.  This was the first link I saw so I immediately called the number on the back of my Citi card telling them what happened and asking them to cancel my account.  Just incase I asked if the 800-388-2200 was a Citi number and they said "yes".  They explained that they were probably calling in reference to exceeding my credit limit.  I don't know what to think.  It still seems a little shady to me.

Well, I got this phone # on my answering machine too, called Citicard's 1-800-950-5114 customer service # (as listed on their website should you wish to verify).  That person wasn't very helpful, so I called the Internet Security specialists (1-888-285-9696) and they called the 388-2200 number themselves with me on hold, and verified that was a legitimate "Delinquent Payments and Collections" department number for Citibank.

So then I did call that 800-388-2200 number, and hit 0 a bunch of times to avoid giving my credit card #.  When I got a real person, I asked them how they would prove to me that they were really Citibank -- after all, this number isn't on the website.  She offered her ID number, her supervisor, and what clinched it for me, to look up my account number based on my home phone number.  She was able to tell me the last 4 digits of my and my husband's cc #s, which then made me believe this was for real (I hadn't given her my cc#, SSN, name or any identifiers at this point.)

She was really nice, it turned out that the auto-dialer for their deparment is on the rampage and called us (we have never been late for a payment) *12* days before the payment was even due!

So relax, hang onto your security savvy (ask *the other party* how they intend to prove they're for real -- and she was able to produce information I was able to verify independently based on something fairly public) -- and try being nice to the other person just in case it's for real.  I bet they get yelled at so much, they'll go out of their way to help some being reasonable and nice!

With all due respect, and I apologize, because this isn't going to come out with very much, but you never should have called in the first place. You never should have given out your info. I hope Citi is able to straighten out the issue, and they probably will.

The huge glaring problem with your story, however, is it's conclusion. There is no reason you shouldn't trust Citibank or cards. They are not the ones running this number. The scam artists running this number are merely using Citi's name to lend credibility to their story. They could have chosen any name, but you shouldn't let their decision tarnish the reputation of that name.

Do the demons ever come? Does being a part of this ever bother you? Or have you already lost your despicable little soul?

Question: Did he answer any questions he wouldn't have been able to answer if he was holding a copy of your bill?

I mean, if I were to go through your mail, take your bill, go home, call you, pretend to be Citibank, and you asked me to prove I was Citibank, I imagine I would be able to do a pretty decent job of pretending, right? And obtaining your bill isn't exactly difficult.

You are very correct to ask them to verify info. That's an excellent approach. I'm just cautious because with some of the other posts here, one never can be too careful, ya know?

I received a call from 505-797-6327 asking me to call 800-388-2200.

The first thing I did was Google the 800 number, which is how I found this page. After reading most of these posts, I thought it was a scam, but then decided to call anyway and ask them to prove they were Citibank, as was suggested in a post here.

When prompted for an account number, I simply pressed 0. When an operator picked up, I told her about the call I received. She asked what number I received it on. I told her. She said they were looking for me, by name, first and last. I asked why. She said in reference to my account, and then gave me the last four digits, accurately. She asked my address. I gave it to her. She told me they had a different address on file, and mentioned a town I used to live in. I gave her the address in that town, which she said was accurate. Then she asked for my password. At this point, I was relaxed, and gave it.

She said I owed $2.13 on a card I thought I had closed. Turns out, I had not. I asked her to close the account. She transferred me to someone else, who waived the balance and closed the account.

Then, I called 866-743-5562, the number on the back of my card (good thing I still had it). The operator I spoke to here also said that I owed $2.13. I guess the credit hadn't posted yet. He also said that the account had been closed, by me, in a previous phone call. He did not say when that call was (but I assume he was referring to the one minutes - not months - ago).

As one final measure, I checked my account online using the URL on the back of the card. There again I saw a past due balance of $2.13, and an indication that the account had been closed.

In short, I'm quite convinced 800-388-2200 is not a scam, and little harm can come from calling them back. As always, it can't hurt to ask them for some information yourself, but that's just good practice.

These guys are probably trying to steal identities. I got a voice mail telling me to call this number concerning my Citicard account. I don't even believe I have a Citcard anymore. Called them back and when I couldn't tell them my account number they asked me for my SSN so I told them to take a hike.

This number is associated with Citibank cards collections department. I guess I was wrong in my initial judgement. It turns out that I still have a Citicard and that I had two unpaid statements. Months ago I opted for paperless billing, then changed email accounts without notifying them. Didn't close the old email account, just stopped using it and checking it. So I never saw the bills. My bad.

I just got an automated message for this number and did call back--the recording I got said it was for Citicards, assisting Citi and AT&T Universal Card accounts. I do have an account with them, so I stayed on the line. I didn't give them my account number because I didn't have it with me, but I did give them my SS# and mother's maiden name before starting to think it was a scam. They then asked for my address and I said, Do I have to give it to you? And the woman seemed understanding and said no. She found my info and said that I had a past due amount, but it was for a really small amount (.90 from iTunes) and said that she would transfer me to customer service to get the amount taken off, but after being on hold for a while, the call was cut off, so of course I suspected a scam even more, and googled the number. However, I just did check my account online, and the amount she told me was indeed past due, so now I'm thinking that it was a collection agency afterall...

I called 3 different numbers that were listed on CITI cards website as I was very concerned about the validity of this call. Every rep I spoke with confirmed that this number was a valid CITI card number.

    Dear Hmmm...

    Following up with your suspicion:

    1)  They were able to tell me the 4 digit numbers for ALL of both my husband's and my credit card numbers.  Unless they have access to both our credit reports that they could pull down in real time (which would mean we are screwed anyway), the totality of this information is not available from a single stolen credit card statement.

    2)  I have checked my credit card statements from Citibank and have never seen my home phone number on any of them.  Is that not true for you?  It would be very difficult for a scammer to be able to reverse lookup my cc#s based on my phone number from any single stolen piece of mail.

Your mileage may vary, void where prohibited, etc.  Of course it is worth being cautious in not giving out personal information, which is why I turned the tables on them and asked them to prove TO ME that they were who they claimed they were.  Since I have multiple accounts with Citibank, this was possible for me.  Other ways that might work might include asking them to confirm your most recent transaction which should not yet be posted on your statement if you have only one account with them, or how many other authorized users there are on your account.  That way nothing specifically personal exchanges between the parties, but if you get enough nonprivate data matching what you know that would not be in your statements, then you are probably confident it's not a scam.

Just suggestions in general.  Good luck out there and stay safe.

Received a couple of voicemails, which indicate they are sorry they couldn't reach me, but to call Citibank at 888-388-2200.  I called the number from a different phone and received a message this number is a non-working Citibank number.

Got a call from 505-797-6327 with a robo-message saying to call 1-800-388-2200 or go to citicards.com (which is the actual site for my credit card).

Got a similar voice mail asking me to call 800 388 2200. Instead of calling them back, I called the number on my credit card itself. Citi verified the 800 388 2200 was ligit, and the call was to alert me to being over limit.

My suggestion to anyone with security concerns would be to call the number on your credit card first. If there are any account problems, they should be able to identify them without you having to call the 800 388 2200 number

Same thing happend to me.  I got really concerned and called citibank back using the # printed on my creditcard.  They confirmed that the 388-2200 number is their collections dept.  Try your self if you don't believe.

800-388-2200: Called and verified with the # on the back of my card. This is legitimate; not a scam. If you're not sure, call for yourself.

I had a card that I lost track of, and had gone past due. They were very helpful - got it all straightened out.

And, no need for name calling.

Someone from this number keeps calling my sister at her home looking for me.  I have not lived there for over 20 years!  I called them back once, and felt very uncomfortable because I wasn't sure it was truely citigroup.  I told the person I spoke with that I would call Citi directly, and they said, "they'll just send you back to us".  I said that was okay.  When I called Citi, I was told they did not have my sister's phone number on file.  At that time I said the only number they should call was my cell - and I made sure they had that number.  I think this is a scam.
