The call came in from a blocked number, and the message was from Mary Hill at Chadwick Martin Bailey (www.cmbinfo.com), a market research company (I googled them).  They said they were doing a survey of people in my field and if accepted I would be paid $75 which could be donated to the American Red Cross if I chose to.  She left a reference number and phone number 800-390-8902, but twice when I tried to call it I got a busy signal.  Interestingly, about 5 minutes later, some random guy (with a blocked number) called me and said I had just called him but he missed the call.  We figured the busy signal followed by my hang-up must have forwarded to him.  Weird.  I won't be calling them back.

I got a message to call this number with a reference call. The called me at my place of employment and left a message with the secretary.  Is this legal?

I received a message at work to call this number along with a reference number.  The message said it was from Kristin Direction & Research.  I called them back.  They were doing a study on using electronics in the classroom.

Caller id showed Research Center 361-288-3069, and since I don't answer these calls, it went to the machine. The caller said she is Phyllis with Direct Research (or Directions Research, she was a little unclear) and is doing a paid study. Wants to talk to the boss (had his name) or whoever is in charge of buying cargo vans. If we qualify and complete the study they will pay $75 as a thank you for 20 minutes of our time. She left the 800 number as the calback along with a reference number.
