They charged me 350 bucks to add free versions of virus apps I could have done myself and then sabotaged my computer to where I had to call them back to remove them.

It's unlikely they removed anything.  Best take your computer to a brick and mortar computer shop and have it checked out.  Also, if you had any financial data in your computer, best change them out.  Now.

My mother-in-law innocently contacted them looking for a phone number for Yahoo mail online.  They even answered the phone as "Yahoo email support".   She let them take control of her computer while they showed her false diagnostics indicating her PC was 97% infected by viruses.  They offered to fix for $100 to be paid to them via gift card. She (finally) got suspicious and disconnected the call and screen share.  They called her back three times within an hour scaring her into thinking she had picked up multiple viruses and finally offered to let her use her credit card directly. She was (luckily) smart enough not to fall for it and hung up.  They then called her son in CA falsely claiming that she had given them permission to contact him and repeated their scare tactics. He didn't bite.  We had her shut down her computer and unplug the network cable. Her son had to change all her log-ins and passwords from his computer in the event that the "fixers" had installed trackers, etc. We took it the next day to Best Buy for scanning.  We get it back on Saturday and will know then whether they found any evidence of infection. What a hassle - and she is highly embarassed that she fell for this ploy. As noted in a prior post, NEVER ALLOW AN UNKNOWN PERSON/PARTY ACCESS TO YOUR COMPUTER. In this case she initiated the call and was too trusting.

This company is the worst, they could not repair the issue and I have tried numerous times to cancel only to be told that I would be charged for a cancellation, unreal.  This is an unethical company that was recommended by "Microsoft".

Sorry, but Microsoft does not farm out work like that.  My initial guess would be that you received a drive by pop up from an ad on a site that you visited that told you to call this number and these scam artists answered.

Thanks to Slim, another registered poster here and computer whiz:

Since the scammers accessed the computer, they probably did one or more of the following:
    • Disabled the anti-virus software
    • Added nasty malware to the computer
    • Copied the Contact List (so they can spam/email your soon-to-be ex-friends)
    • Copied any financial data or passwords they could find
    • Compromised your ID on Facebook or other social site(s), and perhaps on shopping sites.
    • "Zombied" the computer, so it would respond to THEIR commands sent via internet
    • Deleted some important files
    • Asked for money to repair the damage they caused

What can you do immediately after such an attack?
    1.  Pull the cables on the computer, or otherwise disable it, so it cannot access the internet.
    2.  Change ALL  passwords stored on the computer.
    3.  Run FULL malware scans on the computer, in "SAFE" mode!
    4.  Change the passwords again, particularly if the malware scans showed anything.
    5.  Inform your bank and credit card companies.
    6.  Sign up for credit monitoring, and check the status frequently
    7.  Backup non-executable personal, data files to an external storage device.  (Executable files might be infected).
    8.  You may have to bring the computer to a local repair shop, and tell them the story.
    9.  Tell friends what happened, so they can be aware of strange emails from you.
    10.  Connect to the internet only AFTER all the above have been done.
    11.  Change the passwords on all online accounts.  Even better - access a "safe", uninfected  computer, and change your online account passwords RIGHT NOW.

    NOTE:
If your computer set a "Restore Point" while it was infected, any "System Restore" you make will re-infect your computer.  Suggest you delete any potentially infected restore points and avoid setting such restore points until after your computer has been thoroughly cleaned!

You fell for one scam, and might be susceptible to others mentioned on this site:

Read that info to educate and help protect yourself!

Honest computer companies do NOT cold-call people, or cause popups from websites to tell them their computers need fixing!

Some scammers even have websites, and falsely advertise they are associated with popular software packages or computer companies; so do NOT believe a "we will fix your computer remotely" site, and allow them access to your computer!

This is not yahoo.  They partner with another scam company, log on to your computer, get your ipl info, etc,  and then tell you that you have a foreign hacker from russia who has been following you & will commit cyber crimes using your info. They scare you into buying hacker software from them and if you hesitate they will ask you why you don't trust them  they.  Claim that they are yahoo employees.  Get rid of them!
