- John| 1 reply3 calls from this number on VM. Says from Dept of Ed and requesting personal info.
- Caller: Dept of Edu
- ljm replies to JohnI got calls from this number. No voice message. I did start online classes recently but this is not any of the numbers that should be calling me. might be a scam.
- CindiReceived a call from this number but didn't recognize it so I looked it up online & it said Dept of Education. Since I have student loans, I called the Dept of Ed directly and was told that no one called me, that it was an inbound call center & that they didn't make calls out from that number and she asked me to double check the caller ID. I did and gave her the number, she said that it was their number but that the call did not come from the Dept of Ed.
If you answer a call from this number, DO NOT give them any personal information; they have Spoofed or Cloned a legitimate Dept of Education number to try to get SSNs and other personal information.- Caller: unknown-Spoofed Dept of Education
- Lynn| 3 repliesIt's not a scam. I'm looking at a FAFSA application right in front of me right now. It's www.fafsa.ed.gov.
If you've applied for Student Aide while going to college it's them trying to contact you. Their phone number is 1-800-433-3243. or 1-800-4-FED-AID.
Some colleges don't accept student aid or use FAFSA. You usually get an application from the college you have applied to if they do accept student aid. Each public college usually has a deadline to apply for student aid, and a (SCHOOL TITLE CODE) If you've sat with an admissions specialist and they qualified you for a GRANT you can find this information out. The application itself is about 10 pages long. The questions include your tax returns from your job, your financial information and sometimes your parents information also. FAFSA is the U.S. Department of Education Federal Student Aid- Caller: FAFSA U.S. D.O.E. F.S.A.
- Call type: Non-profit organization
- Mary| 1 replyI'm 55 years old and am NOT attending school and have NOT applied for a grant. I just received a call from this number on my cell phone, I did not answer and no message was left. I'm concluding that yes, it is a SCAM - do NOT provide personal info.
- webjocke replies to MarySame here except I'm 4 years older.
- HalThese scammers are causing more confusion than normal. The reason appears to be as some have said that the robo call scammers looking to steal your personal information are "spoofing" or showing us a Caller ID number that does belong to a US government agency that is involved with student loans. So if you should have a student loan and get a call like this, you will have few clues to let you know it's a fake.
While the number they use is legit, you can STILL report the robo call to the FTC at 1-888-382-1222. They can investigate and track them down. It's sad, but don't trust anyone you don't know and are sure you know.- Caller: Student loan scammer
- Call type: Telemarketer
- DocHolidayDon't answer... It's a scam to get you personal information. The department of education does not make outbound calls. Someone has hacked the phone system in order to generate legit caller ID #s to actual government agencies. Again, just don't answer... there isn't anything you can do anyway. Just ride it out... eventually they'll quit.
- Nick| 1 replyI pressed one to hear more information about the department of education loan forgiveness program. A lady introduced herself and then asked if I wanted more information. I asked "Is this a government entity" and they hung up.
Scam? Possibly - CTThis has to be a spoof number, I checked out by calling back and they do not do outgoing calls (Dept of Ed.). Someone is using their number to try and get information.
- WillGot a call from this number this evening on my cell phone, they did not leave a message.
- Nancy replies to NickI received a similar call but my phone said No Caller ID. I answered out of curiosity and when the message said to press 1 for more information I hung up.
- ElleReceived an email from studentloans.gov & clicked on the website link in the email. In red it says the website is unavailable to try again at a later time. I tried calling them and an automated voice message try's to direct you to another website to create an account but then right after they says that website is also unavailable. Definitely a SCAM
- Iron Mike replies to LynnBS, it is a total scam because I haven't applied for Student Aide in over 35 years. All of my loans have been paid off for decades. Why would this number be calling me? I haven't been enrolled for any classes for decades.
I suspect you are part of the scam. - terinot sure if this offer is legitimate. Says they are from the Fed Student Loan debt relief - doesn't seem real - anybody know
- mark replies to Lynn| 1 replyIt is a scam they will never ever call you; especially from a 1-800 number all Federal Gov Agencies have regular DC area code phone numbers........you are being fooled and probably ripped off....I worked for the Federal Government back in the early 90s........they don't call you
- markunknown call at 730 pm east coast time wayy after any legitimate government agency has closed for business and being a Friday, they probably closed at around 3 pm to start the weekend....
- Call type: Scam suspicion
- Mike-in-MD replies to markNot exactly correct. Many Federal Agencies have local offices all over the country and if you receive a call from them, it will not be a 202 area code. In addition, most agencies have toll free incoming only numbers. This is a legit Dept of Ed incoming only number for Financial Aid that scammers have spoofed to fool victims into disclosing personal information that they can use to commit identify theft and fraud. Even if you are applying for Financial Aid or have received it, you would not receive a call from this number if they have questions for you.
- TroyCall came in.. I answered.. the guy said “Hey hows it going?”.. I said how can I help you..he said”You know who this is?”.. I said no.. he said “It’s your cousin”.. I hung up. I don’t have a cousin.
