- Cb| 3 repliesI got a call from them today looking for my ex of more than a decade ago, who I KNOW does not have my number. This is what these scummy collections companies do, after harassing the person they are after doesn't work, they try to identify their associates, friends, family members, etc and by calling us, 1) try to embarras the person and 2) get us to do their dirty work by giving out info on the person or turnin around and harassing the person ourselves. Just resist! Don't call the number back and don't tell your friend/family member about the call, thy already know the collections agency is after them.

- Curious George| 4 repliesWhy don't most of you folks actually answer the phone to see who's calling rather than just reporting you received a call from a certain number? How are you going to find out who's calling and why they're calling in you don't answer? I SUSPECT MOST PEOPLE WHO JUST REPORT THE CALL AND DON'T ANSWER THE PHONE SUSPECT IT'S A COLLECTION AGENCY. Why else wouldn't you answer a phone call.

- Gunnar replies to Curious George| 2 repliesWell, that's because "these" people are smarter than your normal target. Why would anyone answer an unknown number? In this day & age if an unfamiliar caller doesn't leave a message it means one of two things. It's a telemarketer or some scumbag trying to run a scam on you. Why does that bother you? I guess we can all answer THAT question!
Skeff Ett Liv!
Gunnar - Curious George replies to Cb| 1 replyAre you for real with your childish and irresponsible behavior?
- Curious George replies to Gunnar| 1 replyGunner, I have absolutely no idea what your insipid reference about people not answering their phones or your remark 'I guess we can all answer THAT question!' means. If your saying something here please just say what you mean rather than referencing some innocuous implication.Thank you
- Tamianth replies to Curious GeorgeWell thats the pot calling the kettle black!
- Tamianth replies to Curious GeorgeBecause if your not family, friend or someone I actually do business with, I'm not answering it! You have nothing to say to me I want to listen to, nothing to sell I want and I'm not falling for scammers that fall into the heading of nothing I'm going to listen to.
Pretty simple! - Shill Alert replies to Curious GeorgeHe's correctly identified you as someone with nefarious intent who only stands to benefit if your potential victims answer the phone and provide an opportunity for you to take your best shot at tricking them out of their hard earned money.
You obviously don't understand how very easy it is to glean all of this from your post. That's why you're condemned to running scams on the phone and using the internet to try to control the damage sites like this do to crooks like you.
You failed. Go back to your native land -- the boiler room. - zzReceived this call today, recorded message asking for a first name that kind of sounds like mine (purposefully garbled) and then my maiden name. Message stated they were calling from KNSKNF(?). I have no student loans and my credit report on all three reporting sites is completely clean as of last month. I received a similar call two years ago from an agency threatening to sue me over a debt that I didn't incur over 7 years ago - there was never any follow up. These companies purchase debt that is no longer able to be legally collected upon for pennies and then use illegal tactics to try and harass people into paying. If you legitimately owe money, it will show up on your credit report (companies that you owe money to have no problem reporting you to a credit agency) or other legitimate correspondence will be provided to you - not an automated recording purposefully designed to obfuscate the name of the person they're looking for.
- MEI got a call from 800-436-5262 and Susan left a message that she was inquiring about a fan clutch and had an invoice number...We own a mechanic shop but I have no such invoice number.
- laurenIs harassing a friend of mine, called his landlord, and neighbors! This should be illegal!

- Em replies to CbI got this same call...also maybe looking for a guy I broke up with over a decade ago (they said what I THINK was his name, but mispronounced it so I'm not 100% sure he's who they're looking for)...They'd have to be doing some serious detective work to connect me with him, I'm married and my name has changed and I've moved three times since I dumped the dude, plus we've had no contact since 2003! Of course, if he owes somebody money...LOL.
- S.AllenThese [***] called me looking for my step daughter who does not live with me and never has. I asked how they got my number (cell) and they said its listed as the same address given by my step daughter Bull*&^%

Just because someone on the phone calling you says you owe a debt does not mean you actually owe it.
If a voice on the telephone claims you owe a debt:
1. Demand the person give you his or her name, company name, and address
2. Demand a debt validation letter by US mail. E-mail no good.
3. Do not pay the collection agent or anyone else a dime until the debt is validated
Of course they won’t do this, no scammer ever will, so simply ignore them and block their calls.
If they are bothering you, report them:
http://www.consumer.ftc.gov/articles/0149-debt-collection (Threatening civil proceedings with no intent to follow through, or threatening criminal process in order to collect a civil debt is a violation of the Federal Fair Debt Collection Practices Act.) The same goes for endless telephone harassment
Note that the US Supreme Court in the Case of HENSON ET AL. v. SANTANDER CONSUMER USA INC., has recently ruled that the provisions of the Federal Fair Debt Collection Practices Act do not apply if the creditor owns the debt in question. As a practical matter this probably won't effect the kinds of scam debt collectors who often show up on 800notes. The scam collectors don't give you any information about themselves so it is impossible to know whether or not they in fact "own" the debt in question. Most do not send debt validation letters and many often say they are collecting for someone else. So, make the complaint anyway if they are bothering you. Let the FTC sort it out.
Also contact your local attorney general
If they continue to bother you, and you know you do not owe any money, tell them that you know this is a debt scam and that you are making a complaint to the police for extortion. Once you get a copy of the police report and they call you again , just read out the file number and the name of the PD or Sheriff’s office involved. Tell them you’ll be glad to send a copy to them at whatever address the jack***es are working out of now.
You'll probably have to yell at them and talk over them.
You have to get tuff with these people because, being akin to thugs, brute force is (metaphorically speaking). the only thing they understand.- Caller: Informational post
- JoeSchmoeLeft a courteous voicemail from phone number with NY area code. They were looking for an acquaintance. Online search reveals that their 800 phone number appears to belong to an Ohio based debt recovery company (associated with student loans).
