Received a letter in the mail from Vanguard financial services (I am not nor have I ever been a client). Said to call this number with regard to my account. When called asked for SSN. Scam....probably

Vanguard's automated account system.  perfectly legit, dont know why it would ever call anyone though...

It's definitely scam. It mails a letter to you with PIN, asking you to call back and asks you to give out SSN.

nope, not a scam. it really is Vanguard.  Been using the number for 15 years now.

It IS Vanguard Financial Services.  Those who use this company KNOW that it is them.  So stop saying it's a scam.  It's not.

Received a letter telling me Vanguard has disabled my web access to my account because someone had entered an incorrect password 3 times when trying to sign in to my account 01/31/14.  I have not used Vanguard since the 90's.  The letter was addressed to an old address of mine. I tried to call this number that was listed in the letter, but no matter how I tried to get to a customer service rep by pushing 0 they would not direct my call without my entering my SS number so just hung up.  Something fishy about this.

Same thing got a letter saying someone tried to access my account...I do not use vanguard...if I have it was over ten years ago...tried getting customer rep..but had to give social security number....I hung up too...I think its a scam.

This is the phone number for Vanguard's participant services (meaning that you have an existing account with them). The phone system asked for my SSN, so I put in incorrect numbers just to continue through (example 111-22-3333), then when it asked for my PIN and to reset it, I did the same (incorrect numbers).

I eventually got through to an agent who was able to help me.

I had received notification via email from the company that my security questions had been disabled because someone had tried incorrectly to access my account. The Vanguard rep said it's more common than you would think and most times is just someone who has a user name similar to mine who didn't realize they were on the wrong account. That's why security questions/procedures exist.

It asks for SSN because this number is set up for people who have accounts with Vanguard to quickly access their account info, check balance, transfer money, etc.  You can call another Vanguard main number for additional information:  877-662-7447  The number listed above (800-523-1188) is for retirement plan participants, meaning people who are enrolled in an employer retirement plan (a defined benefit, defined contribution, or nonqualified plan).

Susan, The phone number is not a scam, but just today My husband received an email from vanguard stating that his account had been frozen (for irregular online activity). The email looked legitimate and even had the correct phone number. He was directed to click on a hyperlink  to unlock and verify the account. He did not click on the hyperlink, but did call the number. They directed him to send the email to vanguard because it was likely a phishing email. So...why this reply to you? The phone number was legit, but the very misleading email was not.

Called the number in the letter. It was vanguard. I didn't say or type my SS. Then a rep picked up.

800-523-1188 is Vanguard's number for retirement accounts.  I've been a customer for 25 years.  Today, Saturday, they called my cell phone number which is not in my profile. No message was left.  They would leave a message if there was a legitimate issue.  So I believe their number is being spoofed.  I've never been called by them except when we had an on-going issue.  I advise folks to use caution if something strange is going on.

Got a letter from Vanguard directing me to call regarding my account. I don't invest so seemed phishy. Decided to warn my siblings.  Called my sis and her husband first.  My sis laughed and said her bf got similar letter a few years back called and it was a 401(k) she'd funded via payroll deductions and employer contributions at her first job right out of high school. So long as you don't touch it's not taxable, so IRS didn't bother telling her about it nor whoever was doing her taxes. So I called. It's Vanguard. I have a 401(k) from Cargill way back in the 80's, lol. Anyone who's worried about #'s legitimacy can just call every company they've ever worked at. Ask to be transferred to HR. Ask for a benefits coordinator and ask if they used Vanguard for employee 401(k)s when you worked there. If yes, then what's the number. They'll give you the "scam" number - sheesh! some people. Lol)
