- Deb PFirst off...they call from an IP address, not a phone number. These people are scammers, I just slammed the phone down on "Patrick". Yeah, sure his name is Patrick, lots of people in India are named Patrick. I applied for a payday loan, this place says sure, I'll give you $200 and there's an $89 finance charge, that raises my eyebrows a bit but I'm in a bind. They call and verify every freaking item -- twice. Then they demand my debit card number, say they're going to withdraw a penny and put it back. THEN they call my bank. At this point I've had it. I ask if they're licensed to do business in California..."oh, yes, the whole country, we're in Salt Lake City." I asked if they're licensed in California why don't they know that California regulates interest rates on payday loans and that they can't charge more than a flat 15%. He says I'm going to call your bank now. He called my bank to verify and I told the bank this guy is a scammer don't tell him anything. Sigma is a very, very bad solution. Call your state, they'll give you good information.

- Deb P replies to keithYou work for them, don't you, "Keith"?
- JakePeople seriously, a payday loan is exactly that and not intended to be used as a long term lending solution. Interest rates on these are always high. They do deposit the money and yes they will take the minimum if you say it's ok. Just use as long as necessary and don't use it again.

- Kayla| 3 repliesI applied for a loan and was approved for a $3000 so after they had called me i talked to Gary Watson and told me that i had to go to the nearest Rite Aide store and give proof to someone there that i had $175 to pay the monthly fee. They werent asking for the money they just wanted visual proof that i had enough money to pay the monthly. I have to be on the phone with Gary while the person can verify that i have the money and if its okay then the money will be transferred into my account. Is this legit? I didnt have to tell tell anything i just had to tell them the last 4 digits of my routing number and account number and the last four of my social they knew the rest? HELP!

It is a scam.
The "proof" they want is for you to send them money via Green Dot or similar means.
Read this:
"It is illegal for companies doing business by phone in the U.S. to promise you a loan or credit card and ask you to pay for it before they deliver."
http://www.consumer.ftc.gov/articles/0078-advance-fee-loans
If you or a friend need a loan, you really should read this:
http://www.consumer.ftc.gov/articles/0153-choosing-credit-counselor
In fact, the more you need the money, the more urgent it is to read that information!
Protect yourself!
Recognize that NO legitimate company is going to offer you a loan, without their doing some background / credit checks on you, and they WILL generally need a snailmailed, signed contract.
If you or a friend fell for the scam, please try to educate your other friends. The only way to stop these scams is to cut off their source of money! - CWG40 replies to KaylaTotal goddam scam! For crissakes don't give them ANYTHING. There is no loan and you will be out your money!

Things to remember about loans offered by phone or e-mail:
Loans
1. No reputable lender will lend you money over the phone.
2. No reputable lender will lend you money by e-mail
3. On-line lenders are nothing more than conduits for another loan scam.
4. Advance fees for loans are always illegal. At least in most American states.
5. If you want to borrow money, go to an established brick and mortar lender that has been around awhile.
6. If you receive a call from someone with an Indian accent either a. threatening you or b. offering you something, you know it’s a scam and you should hang up immediately.
7. These people are predators, the calls are not random, they have information that they have bought from various sources and know your financial history. If you have ever taken out a pay-day loan, they have all your information. They know who they are calling. They like to pick on women, single mothers, the elderly and members of the immigrant community. Also, those who might be in financial difficulty.
