Claimed to be CIBC and wanted to "confirm my banking information because there was a problem with my account". This was at 8 o'clock at night so I refused to give them anything, called my personal CIBC financial advisor and she told me to report it to the authorities.

I got this call too, claiming they're from CIBC National Collections. CIBC has listed their departmental numbers here on this link: http://www.cibc.com/ca/inside-cibc/dept-contacts.html and 1-800-668-8850 doesn't appear to be a CIBC number.

Phone message (identified as CIBC)requesting I call back (M-F up to 11 pm); problem with my account (didn't say which one or what it was). Gave no contact name. Went to my branch to make usual bill payments; nothing flagged as being a "problem". I have not called back.

I just had a call from someone claiming to be a rep for CIBC. This person asked that I provide personal info to verify who I was. I would not. A call to my local branch indicates that this number 1-800-668-8850 IS NOT A CIBC number. My branch manager stated that CIBC would never call and ask personal info. Only if I call CIBC will they require that I provide info to verify that I am who I say (for my security). This make sense as anyone can call claiming to be a rep from a bank and anyone can get a 1-800 number to receive calls back. My very clear advice is NOT TO PROVIDE PERSONAL INFO TO ANYONE WHO CALLS YOU. This person has called twice and will get an earful on their next attempt to get my personal info.

800-668-8850 is the number for CIBC Collections, usually their callout number.  If they leave you a message, they will usually tell you to call 800-256-8580, which is listed on the CIBC website at the bottom of the page as CIBC National Collections.

    http://www.cibc.com/ca/inside-cibc/dept-contacts.html

You can verify the 668 number by calling telephone banking.

However, I advise *not* to give them any information when they call you (phone numbers can be spoofed).  Instead, call them back at the second number (1-800-256-8580) & *then* give them the information they request.

Advise not to ignore them:  They usually can help you arrive at a solution if you work with them.

I called 1-800-256-8580 to verify that number. They told me that is a number from their VISA depart. So pick up ur phone instead of ignoring it, cowards, they are not gonna kill u through the phone. Just dont simply give them ur info, let them speak out the first half of ur info, and so you can verify it.

since January 1, Bell will no longer allow callbacks to 800-256-8580. Thank God. They're African or Ukrainian con men. What was my first clue? Their English. Seriously people, don't fall for this.

Although any CIBC customer who hands out their "Peen Noom Beer" to the Russian guy I talked to on the phone deserves to have their bank account cleared out as soon as possible.

By the way "Reek" means something different in English.

But you're very wise to advise Canadian CIBC customers that they are "cowards" not to give out personal information to the callers from these 800 numbers. That's actually a pretty good strategy, Reek.

Do you have any more details about what might happen to them if they ignore these calls?

    Thanks in advance, Reek!

Hi guy's, just to clear this up! I called this number back and believe it or not, but this number is 100% legit! In regards to asking personal information, this is because of the Privacy Act Of Canada. ALL banks are required to ask the same information when calling a customer regarding a problem on their account(s). They ask you 2 security question's by law... 1) Verify Full address including Postal Code. (If you don't feel comfortable, ask them to verify portions of the address first, such as last 3 of postal code and/ or street #.
    2) Date of birth, (Again, if you don't want to verify, ask them to provide you with the day or month first)
    3) Verify 1 product or service you have with CIBC.

90% of the customers KNOW why they are calling! These people are your last step before you are sent to a collection agency and your credit is destroyed... Best to treat them with some respect, cause you tick them off and they can send it right away to collections! Be nice and they will grant you enough time to pay your debts, offer financial advice, career info and even offer you a Loan to cover your debts!

Anyways, I'm glad I called back! Because I wasn't aware my visa was charged from a random company, and my credit about to be trashed. I was 78 days past due, and they helped direct to to the fraud dept.

So... I understand why people are freaked out by the security questions and all.. But they never asked me for numbers or personal baking info at all! I even asked they to provide me my old visa number and the lady refused. Stated she only felt comfortable giving out the last 4 digits of my card for security reasons.

Anyways, happy I called. And the calls have now stopped! YAY

I don't have any business related to CIBC, and I have received multiple call from them, no message.

What do they want to collect from me when I don't have any ties to them?

Just call them back, told them I received multiple call from this number, lady searched based on my phone number and asked my last name, which I didn't give to her, then she said there is a message for ... which I didn't know, she apologized and said good bye.

Apparently it is a legit call from CIBC collection centre but they had my number wrongly instead of their client.

lol if u call telephone banking, the # on the back of ur debit card...they will verify its a legit dept...also, if u look up the federal law regarding a bank calling u...they have to by-law verify 2 pieces of ID to ensure they are talking to the correct cx, so not to give ur private banking matters to a 3rd party! reporting soemthing like this to authorities wont do anything. if u type in the # in google, it will show up as a legit CIBC dept! they are the only bank that provides this type of serive to their cx b/c they value ur business.
