I received an email that appears to be from Washington Mutual (email address customerservice@wamu.com) that says -

For your security, your debit mastercard has been locked due to inactivity or because of too many failed attempts. Please call us immediately at (800) 691-3856 regarding this issue.

We appreciate your prompt attention to this matter.

I do not have a credit card through Washington Mutual. I haven't called the number on the email and was hoping this site would provide me with information on whether or not this is a legitimate number.

I will update when I know more.

I got the same message to my email - I called the number, it's an activation scam likely, trying to get people to share their actual debit card #, expiration date and ID...stay away!

same here... first of all, I don't have a DEBIT card with WAMU, and the credit card I do have, has a different email address on file then the one that this OBVIOUSLY FRAUDULENT sender used to email me... unfortunately, there are people out there who fall for this, so these hackers keep trying...

Just got the same message but from Wachovia.  It didn't seem right so I googled the phone number and found a lot of others have gotten the e-mail.  Definitely a scam.

I got an e-mail today listing the same number. This one however was supposed to be from Wachovia. Here it is:

What do I do if I already called and gave them my card numbers? I didn't find out about this until just now...

I would call the actual credit card companies to let them know your accounts have been compromised.  Treat it as a stolen credit/debit card!

'Darn' - IMMEDIATELY call the credit card issuer and tell them exactly what happened.  They will close the accounts and, likely, open new accounts for you.  Additionally, expect to have to fill out a police report for fraud.

Depending on how much information you provided, I would also suggest checking your credit reports just in case these people try to use your information to open fraudulent accounts.
