- Lola| 4 repliesThe company's name is Efix Now in Draper, UT, and they recently ripped off a senior citizen friend of mine. They didn't telephone her from this number though. A rep contacted her through her AOL e-mail account and wrote (possibly through instant messaging) that her computer was severely infected and needed to be fixed immediately. At the time, she wasn't having any problems, just reading her messages, but she thought the rep was with AOL and allowed him to "fix" the problems. The only thing he did that I could see was to make her e-mail inaccessible and then charged her $200 for it. I had to call the bank to get their 800 number above. When I called them, the man I spoke to was very rude and blamed my friend for OK-ing the work and then paying for it with her credit card. He offered to reduce the charge to $150, but I told him that was unacceptible. My friend is 85 years old and can't fully understand what happened. This company probably preys on a lot of folks who aren't tech-savvy. Since they must have changed her e-mail password and security question, it seems likely to me that they were going to charge her for more "service" in the near future. Needless to say, we plan on contesting the entire $200 charge.

- Kentucky senior replies to Lola| 2 repliesI did get a call from a guy from the 1-800 704 8416 number and now am worried. Efix did fix my computer but left it in safe mode. I could not use it for anything this way. I called back 1-801-878-8338 and the guy took it out of safe mode and I was apprehensive with his needing to work more on it. I believe I have been maybe scammed, but I did pay $150 on credit card. It has gone thru. Am I ok? Was the second number legit???
- Jon replies to Kentucky senior| 1 replyEfix Now indeed IS a scam outfit---think of it as a college for con artists. Their defense in court? It's NOT against the law to operate a badly run company!! THAT's how they manage to wriggle out of Civil Court---and they have a politician ( or two ) in their pocket ( that's how they get supplied with phone list "hot sheets" ).
The general rule of thumb: If they hang up on your answering service, they're NOT legit......however......
Unlike your usual schmoo con artist outfit, Efix WILL record a slick worded message on your answering service---using YOUR NAME they got off their phone list "hot sheet"!! They pray you're someone near senile--or one not tech savvy and easy to double talk to---and have the cash they seek.
Your best way to shut down these crooks: NEVER take their call.....EVER. - Jon replies to JonAdditional note: Efix Now has a laughable slick scam website. Efix lists several common PC problems they'll be all to happy to "fix" for OVER $50---AND UP.
What Efix doesn't want you to know is: That same long list of problems can be fixed FOR FREE, by going to www.piriform.com and download / install their one click easy to use program, Crap Cleaner!!
