I received mail with a number to contact which is 800-821-5012. I return the call it states I have received a call from this number someone will be calling me again. I block and call it's someone claiming be social security stating leave social about payments, Soc Sec never asks for your Soc Sec number for your protection I am confused is this real or scam? Wanting $500 from 11,000 owed that has no reason why it's owed.

I got a letter saying I needed to call and give them money for social security. My mail is constantly being opened and reclosed, you have to look at your mail really closed. It's noticable..but you have to really look at  it. I believe this number is being used in a credit card scam. My phone won't even dial the number... Scammer...

I just received a phone call from 1-816-471-2890 asking for my daughter that it was from the Social Security. That she needs to call back at 1-800-821-5012

I received a call from someone claiming that they were from Social Security and trying to contact my ex-wife. The call came in from 816-471-2890. The caller left a message to call her @ 816-471-2890. I doubt that Social Security is calling my number looking for my ex-wife since we have been divorced over 6 years. My guess is that it is some some sort of scam or possible  collection agency. Be very careful with this caller.

I received a letter from Social Security Administration (MAMPSC DEBT MGMT SECTN) <-- as if that wasn't a tip off, I figured this was a scam when I get it however instead of contacting the number on the letter I called the real social security office which was a waste because the employee told me to call the scammers. Soon as I called they started talking about credit cards. I immediately hung up the phone. A scammer is a scammer but why would the personal at the social security administration tell me to call the scammers? I felt like they were in on it. I told him what the number was on the letter and he told me to call them. Good help is hard to find!

I received a very real looking letter and envelope saying it’s from Social Security. It said I might be due a refund and to call them. I even looked up the MMPAC department which does exist. So I googled the call back number and got to this page. I will assume this is a scam, but I am certain many people are falling for this.

Simple solution. Call Social Security at a known, published number.

Received the same letter as Leslie has reported.  Just throw it away and feel good that you didn't get suckered!

I received the same letter as Leslie reported. I called and was given information of why and it seemed legit. I was told that I could get the refund but that I would have to pay it back. If i decided not to get the refund then my account was at $0. I hope this was legit because I gave out my social security number.

Umm, a refund is usually for an overpayment of some sort so why would you have to pay it back? In the past when I was due a refund it was automatically sent to my account where my monthly SS benefit is sent and I received a letter explaining the refund.  Big red flag so you need to take steps to protect yourself from a possibly compromised SSN.  Place credit freezes with all three credit bureaus and also inform Social Security of possible compromise.

I received the same letter a while back and took it to the SS office in Big Spring Texas and was told that it was legit. So far I have had nothing on my credit that shouldn't be there.

So you got the refund? What was the refund for? And why was another poster told they'd have to pay it back? I'm leaning toward you being a shill for this scam.

we got a letter in the mail to call this number for a potential refund, it was a total scam wanting our social security number and the top of the letter said 2ND Attempt... what a bunch of scammers

Scammers spoof this number to trick their victims into believing they are getting a refund, so what good does it do to inform others this is a legitimate number for the SSA?
