- ericyou owe money on your student loans...
- Bobsmith| 3 repliesIts a scam.
I don't have loans and this number has been mine for a looonnggg time. The will ask for your SSC, DOB, Name. Basically all that they need to screw you. If you didn't pay your loan an automated message wouldn't be calling you (clearly phishing). An actual person with info on you, such as YOUR NAME would call you to discuss the problem. As well you would be getting letters in the mail. Don't waste your time! - finaid proThis is the legitimate phone number for the Department of Education's Direct Loan program. http://www.ed.gov/offices/OSFAP/DirectLoan/callus.html
- brianp replies to Bobsmith| 2 repliesactually, it is a direct loans. and they are not a scam. if they call you, its simple, either you or someone whos account has you as a co-signer, owes money. pay your loans.
- AmberWell actually BOBSMITH i know this is not a scam for sure, i work with them all the time, and i know they are not a scam. They are the Direct Loan Servicing Center who is a company that deals with the repayment of your loans, they are goverment based, i dont think you would have this problem if you either paid your loans or if you didnt offer to cosign for someone.

- Brit| 2 repliesMaybe someone will see this. I have letters from them, asking me to pay my loan which should not yet be necessary to pay, the number listed on the page is the same 1-800-848-0979; however, when I call to ask them questions about why I am getting these 6 months early, there is a message saying
"Your call cannot be completed at this time, please try your call again later." I am going crazy because I've called every hour for two days. Eatern time, central time, pacific time, and still the same message. Anyone know another way to call them. No other number listed on the letters. - blueberryits from direct loan services. its your studient loans. they usually call to get your info so you can start to repay. they are pretty good about working out payment plans and when you do they send you payment coupons and a schedule of your payments and how much they will be for the duration of the process. there not so bad, they just want repayment and are very willing to help you. they also have a web site www.myedaccount.com

- blueberry replies to blueberrysorry just realized that thats the number you listed as not able to get through. its the number i have but i was able to call then on the 24th and got though. you might try again
- Josh| 1 replyThe myedaccount.com domain is bogus. Whois data is "private" and isn't under .gov. No government entity would be using private registration nor would they operate such important business under .com instead of .gov.
DO NOT deal with myedaccount.com or anything referencing it, you're being scammed. The number may be legitimate but caller ID can be spoofed, if you want to make sure you're talking to some one legitimately call the number on http://www2.ed.gov/offices/OSFAP/DirectLoan/callus.html, don't just assume the people calling you are legitimate. - GE replies to JoshIt's legit, they are a subcontractor for the Govt. You can use dl.eg.gov and it will link you to the same place.
- MikeSo they are not a scam but the first thing the automated message asks when you call is your SSN...sure sounds like a scam to me. I don't have any student loans and have never cosigned for any but I'm getting calls but it's not a scam. Yeah right.

- Recent Graduate| 2 repliesI just had gotten off the phone with a representative at the number 1 800 848 0979, which is Direct Loans. So stop panicking! When I had spoken with them, it was about an automated debited feature where monthly payments will be taken out of your bank account automatically. Last Friday, they had called me and left a message letting me know that. Though, when I called today, I asked them why am I signed up for that, and they said that I am not signed up for that feature and to disregard it. The number is on a government website on FAFSA http://www2.ed.gov/offices/OSFAP/DirectLoan/callus.html

- annieI received and automated voice message on my cell phone which only has text messaging on it....no one has had my cell # before yet these people call on THANKSGIVING claiming to be the DEPT OF EDUCATION calling about my student loan (I dont have one) and they will use my debit card to make monthly payments. They proceed to say that if they have reached the wrong number to call 800-848-0979. It is deceptive and an invasion of privacy.

- rk replies to brianp| 1 replythey also call you if a family member died and want you to pay them. just remember, they HAVE to go through probate if someone dies. DO NOT TALK TO THEM OR MAKE ANY ARRANGEMENTS! THEY MUST GO THROUGH PROBATE WITHIN 90 DAYS OR THE PERSON IN CHARGE OF THE ESTATE IS NOT RESPONSIBLE FOR PAYMENT OF DEBT OF THE DECEASED. IF IT GOES DIRECTLY TO THE LEGAL HEIRS, THE HEIRS ARE NOT RESPONSIBLE FOR DEBT ( unless they own a house and car and you want to keep it. [***] the credit cards they can't do anything to you if they don't go through the legal process.)
- RK replies to rkI got the numbers confused but if you ever come across 800-878-3317, my message applies.
