A woman named Miss Stewart called my job and verified employment and left a message with the director of HR to have me call them.  When I called back to get their address, they WOULD NOT give me their address.  That has to be against the law.

identified themseleves as law office re matter in their office for my spouse, this ids them as collections agency ... isn't identifying themselves as law offices illegal?

They are a debt collector that buys up a lot of junk debt and attempts to collect on it.  Have changed their company name numerous times.  One of the many franchises of Collect America.

I was contact re my daughters debt.  Should we pay them?

Unscrupulous debt collector, although they will tell you that they are a law office.  They are known for their fraudulent actions against consumers, fraudulent threats, and harassment.  Occasionally sent out mass mailings that appear to be court or legal documents, but are completely fraudulent.
There is a class action lawsuit against them in Pennsylvania.
If they harass you, keep a detailed record of ALL their calls and messages, then sue them and report them to the Federal Trade Commission where they already have quite a thick file.

Called my daughter to talk about foreclosing her home- she does not even own a home. Then asked for her Social Security number.

Called today, Mr Hutchinson was insisting he was a lawyer, threatened to have the sheriff dept serve warrant tomorrow. Wanted to cut a deal before 5pm. So little did he know who he was talking to. Also just a little hint for them, before you make your little threats make sure you're not talking to an IRS auditor. Good luck

what is the time period for the statue of limitations for debt?

Good for you!  Someone needs to take control of these companies and straighten them out.  I wonder if these people are hired just because they are liars, rude and nasty.  I wonder what their credit looks like.

I've have gotten into a little trouble with debt.  This company has threatened me and have been trying to pay off my debt to make it right.  They told me if I made so many payments they would cut me a deal (which was not one).  They threatened to turn me into a lawyer (which they wouldn't be lenient at all), call relatives & my job and now they are telling me that I have to pay all this extra money because of interest.

Should I pay them the rest?  What happens if I don't?  I heard that if they don't have a license in my state they can't do anything. What then?

I got 3 voice messages asking for my sister....she has some debts. Two from a female voice leaving the 1800-921-8660 to call back. the other message from a "Mr. Harris" saying that this was a important legal matter to call back ASAP. I am in Texas. They must prove that it's a legitimate debt you incurred. Don't pay them anything. You can tell them you are legally correct in instructing them to stop all telephonic contact via fax and if they decline to supply a fax number: you tried. Then sue them for harassment.

called pertaining to a dept that was over a year ago..my husband died last year and they told me unless i give them a death certificut that the dept would be owed by me, i told them that his case was closed and that my name was not on his account so they can not sue me for any money, what should i do?

I receive between 2 and 4 calls from this number every day, and have for over a month.  I received one voicemail - from the same Mr. Harris someone referenced above - which I've saved but obviously am choosing to ignore.  I am a graduating law student and begin work at my NYC firm in the Fall.  Two questions - 1) (I should probably know the answer to this) If they're not lawyers, isnt it completely unlawful to represent themselves as such? and 2) do I need to worry about them contacting my firm??  Or the NY Bar?? (each candidate undergoes a character and fitness test).  My debt situation is crappy but I never thought I'd have to deal with it interfering with my ability to get a job...

This company uses unscrupulous practices to embarrass people into paying their debts.  For instance, they called a relative out of state to ask for the debtor, trying to collect money owed on an account. The out of state relative, who is not a close relative of the debtor and someone the debtor does not call, this relative was not listed on their credit application. The only way this collection agency could get this relative's name and phone number was by accessing the debtor's spouse's personal phone calls.  

This is an invasion of privacy.  This practice should be illegal.
